Hi everyone, I have just rescued an 1990 TP Elite (I think) wagon. Have been doing work on making it roadworthy and checking everything out on it.
What I have as a major issue, is a leak on the water pump end of the camshaft. Can I replace the seal here, or is it more serious and require workshop attention?? The leak seems quite bad, although I have only driven it 20km at this stage. It is an EFI motor if that makes any difference.
If you know what is needed and where I can get it, I would appreciate the help. Got to get of me **** and post some pics too.

yes replace the seal

best way is to undo the camshaft pully (14 mm bolt)
then rockers caps so you dont damage the seal when you fit it
19 nm on the rocker bolts... no more they strip easily

Remove the pully, using a seal remover take out the old seal, make sure all is good and clean. You may smear and only smear a small amount of sealant (not silicone but proper engine sealant) around the outer edge, make sure you oil the inner seal, using a socket over the shaft gently push the new seal in.

I have on occasion used 2 seals as the cams tend to get pretty burred around the seal surface.

Thanks for info guys, I generally use Permatex non mardening for things like seals etc, would this be ok in this area? Also, what do you mean by using two seals?? Two at once, or they wear quicker?

permatex black

I put the newer seal inside and the older outside edge of the bearing cap
on the shaft

Dumb question, but does anyone have any tech images of the items mentioned for undoing and removal. I just want to be certain of everything I touch, don't want to stuff it all up.

I think I need to replace the rear camshaft seal on mine too. There's oil on the back of the engine (at the waterpump end) and I can't see anywhere else it could be coming from.

Are you saying that the seal can be pulled out and the new one pressed in without removing the rocker cover and loosening the cam bearing cap bolts? I'd much prefer not to mess with the cap bolts if I dont have to.

The only things that have to come off are te water pump pully cover and the pully, all the rest can stay where it all is.

Use a small hook to grab the seal, get it out, clean it all, grab the new seal, perhaps put some gret sealant on it, some oil in the inner seal (where it contacts the cam shaft), put it all back together and your all set

Damn rude of me:redface: not to mention my results. Thank you for your help and info on this one, job done. 35 minutes seal changed and hey presto, no more oil leaks. Thganks all for the helpful info you provided.

I did mine too last night. Had some trouble getting the old seal out. Eventually I carefully drilled a couple of 3mm holes through it parallel to the crankshaft, then was able to hook it out with a strong piece of wire with a right angle bend about 5mm from the end. (Got to be careful not to scratch the camshaft though). I was surprised how far back the seal went when I tapped the new one in, so I put a second seal in too.
