hey guys i decided to make a stand alone thread re my new aquisition.
the car is a KS rada with 153000km on it and a seized motor.
car is currently at my olds place in bendigo having the motor stripped and cleaned out ready for re-assembly.
so far what my old man has told me it looks like the first owner has cooked it and it's locked up for a first time due to the burnt oil on the conrods and rocker gear and was never put back together properly.
so what happened to the guy i bought it from is the bearing caps have come loose and chewed out the bearings and crank journals causing a second lock up.
what is being done in bendigo is the following
new crank
new bearings / piston rings
conrods shot peened
new rod bolts
new head studs
heads skimmed flat (approx 10thou i think)
new oil pump
kays appear to be genuine due to the condition of the interior and besides a motor that has locked up twice it's in good condition otherwise
has a few shopping center blemishes and a big one in the boot lid that is gonna require some massaging to have the wing sitting properly.
i have been told by my old man not to part with this thing any time soon.
rego till april and all for the insanely expensive cost of $710 on ebay
pics below and more to come

comment away guys
Looks great man, get that engine all fixed up and she'll be a beaut, especially for the price. Not sure how you'd go fixing that boot lid, might be able to pop it back out, otherwise just hunt some wreckers for a decent one, not an impossible task :D
Have fun with her!

Very tidy paintwork on that one. Nice pickup. Always loved the KS radas, pure unadulterated sex on wheels.

Looks good, but I'd expect you'll be forking out at least that amount getting the engine going again...

so 1500 bucks for a low k's verada? you got ripped....bahahahaha dats a great deal mate
best of lukc with it all, hopefully see it out there sometime, looks good already so can only get better
~twiggy~
nice job mate. Fix that boot, get her running and then you have a tidy rada running for less than what it would cost for a running TS with similar kms.
Then the mods begin

Bargain for $700. Well done.

Yeh $700.00 is alright except for that fact that these will cost a fair bit:
new crank
new bearings / piston rings
conrods shot peened
new rod bolts
new head studs
heads skimmed flat (approx 10thou i think)
new oil pump
Have you got quotes on all that? Or doing it all yourself?

Damn i didn't know it had those problems. Ah well. Let us know what you're quoted

like i said the engine work required will come to approx $800 thanks to an old man who has made a few contacts over the last 30 years playing with his own cars
as for the rods they are being shot peened in the tool room that is attatched to the factory he works in
it WILL be running by the end of the easter weekend as long as we can get the crank and that is the most expensive part at $300 for a brand spankers
crank is due in tuesday, heads are due back on monday (today) and rods and bearings etc are all ready for assembly with full gasket set that is already there
my old man and i will be doing the assembly over easter

not too sure atm
will be getting it on the road and then work on making it straight and after that i'll more than likely lower her cos to be frank i can't help myself
the idea is to use it as a cheap reliable and comfortable daily so i can make my calais do 10's in street trim

Sounds good can't go wrong for $700,
I payed $1400 for a kr verada with a blown head gasket (knowingly) but it was only the thin edge of the wedge as I found out.

20-03-2008, 10:19 AM
you're right i can't go wrong for the money
hell even if i had decided to abandon the whole idea i could make my $700 back with interest by wrecking it
will post some more "accurate" pics on the weekend and actually show what condition it really is in.
as i said those pics above are telling lies :D

ok after a little bit of messing around and one hell of a cluster **** (forgot to tighten the timing belt tensioner BOLT) she runs
total cost for parts and machining was just over a grand
more accurate pics after she's had a wash:redface:

200kw_vn
24-03-2008, 10:16 AM
had reg till april when i bought it and that's due on the 8th
"SHOULD" pass rwc without a hassle
everything looks good underneath it and the screen looks pretty good
tyres are good and brakes are almost new as they were done about 4 weeks b4 the motor locked up.
front head gasket is leaking so she won't be coming back to melb for about a week.
should see what i'm driving in the mean time lol

Certainly is a Series 1 Diamante Bar, will look shmick if you can get foggies put in. I'm still trying to get mine stripped that I bought from Lucifer, no one wants to touch it....

its not hard do it your slef + paint your self i done this on my old 2nd gen

11-04-2008, 11:32 AM
what do ya mean by stripped?
paint stripped?
if so then bite the bullet and sand it back by hand then use a plastic primer (can will do but gun is obviously better) and then get your colour code of choice and after giving the primer a light sand spray the colour onto the bar
just a tip if you don't have a compressor and gun handy
if you use PP cans then don't let em get much more than 1/2 empty
propellant pressure starts to drop after that and you end up with an un even coat
finish off with clear an wa la you have a freshly sprayed S1 D bar :D
having said that i still gotta do mine
on the foggies i have a set here that are rectangle combination fog / driving lights that i plan on filling the holes with

Not quite that easy as there is a large number of paint layers which would take for ever to sand and to tell you the truth I'm patient, but not that patient. Originally I was looking to get someone to do beadblast the paint off (equivalent of sandblasting but for plastic) but have had trouble finding someone in my area that does bead blasting. I've been told that it'll only cost about $50 to get stripped by bead blasting then another $100 for a spray. I could do this myself but I want this bar to look good for a long time and not crack and fall away like it has at the moment (no offence intended Lucifer).
Sorry for nicking your thread 200kw_vn :).

I dont see why it wouldnt be working.
Pretty sure all rada models (KS anyway) got ABS
5spdvl
08-05-2008, 07:51 AM
Yeah, they did. However, when I was a mechanic at Mitsubishi, it was quite common to have KR/KS Veradas come in with ABS present but not plugged in. No one could ever tell me why either!
Anyway, car looks great. :D
200kw_vn

any progress = nope
yes does have ABS and i can only assume it's still connected but i don't tend to get close enough to anything that i have to brake hard enough for the system to actually kick in
when i actually get something else done to it i'll get this thread moved to members machines :D
