hey all
have 2000 tj sport trip auto,
is a great car to drive:D
it pulls really hard for the first 3 gears but drops in 4/5
any suggestions as to why??
or is this normal?
have got a a 2.5cat back, and k/n pannel filter
cheers

4 and 5 are overdriven gears aren't they? Or at least 4 is a 1:1 ratio or close to it.

It can depend on how you are pushing it. If you a topping out a max power in third you are doing well over the speed limit. With normal to hard acceleration by the time you hit 4th you are well below the rev range for max torque. e.g you change the first 2 gears when the revs are high say around 5000rpm+as they are short and reach high revs quickly, by the time you hit fourth and not speeding you are probably doing below 3000 rpm. There is still plenty of power in fourth, you just have to be in the right rev range to give you a another kick. If you think about doing a 1/4 mile you are only just hitting 4th(5spd auto) before line at 150km/h at max power(not max speed) So if you got a long enough road to select 4th at around 5500rpm you will probably see it still has power and you were expecting to much low down in the rev range. 4th more for cruising at 55-60km/h

your are right max torque is a lot higher up in rev range, if i was in higher revs in 4th it will be pulling hard.
makes more sense now,
was thinking there was something wrong:confused: . but is all relative to what rev range i am in in each gear as to how hard it i pull..
have got plenty of long roads out here so might go have a little play:D
cheers

have thought about getting it looked at just for peice of mind,
only prob is live 250k away from closest auto mech's.

correct:bowrofl:
I wouldn't be expecting 14's on the 1/4 mile lol Also the 3.5lt is notorious for not doing much, power wise, under 3000 RPM

Manual magnas dont pull hard in 4th, they're pretty slow in 3rd even.

Read the OP, its a 5 speed tippy.. not a manual

I know, and I'm saying even manuals with shorter ratios are still slow.

oh well guess it is just time to start looking at some mods to get the heart pumping a bit more
i would have thought that a manual would pull a lot better than an auto
went for a run in mates and it went really well,

I dont comprehend this answer at all. How can a tiptronic in a Magna be a "sort of clutch"? The tiptronic system is merely a full manual over ride on a straight automatic transmission.

While you're at it check the PCV valve - it often becomes clogged/sticky and won't release when it should
This means that the low load/ high vacuum circuit may not close with high load/large throttle openings - your vacuum is reduced and so is your performance
To clean, remove the valve and shake it - if you can't hear a 'rattle' sound agitate it in a bath of petrol and a capful of metho, or hit it with a pressure-pak can of engine degreaser
You should clean them every 5Kkm IMO
Cheers, Barry
