View Full Version : DIY: Climate Control Globe Change in 3rd Gen
I've noticed there isn't a DIY guide as such for doing this, and I figured since its a fairly annoying issue, some of you might like some steps to follow to change a globe in the Climate Control unit, should one fail on you.
*Before you start, be aware that any thing you do as a result of the below guide is at your own risk, I won't be held responsible for any damaged caused from following this guide.*
To kick off, remove the Climate/Stereo section of the dash as per this guide. (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/mitsu/console/stereoremoval.htm), being careful to disconnect all looms before entirely removing the unit. (Remember that any present stereo settings (eg. Stations, Eq) will be lost when the loom is disconnected from the headunit.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40611.jpg
Then you need to remove the fascia, be it woodgrain or standard black plastic, you remove the 3 screws on each side as shown below:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40641.jpg
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40651.jpg
Then, proceed to remove the four screws which detaches the unit from the bracket:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40661.jpg
Following that you need to remove the temperature knob, which pulls straight off, but is firmly held on.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40671.jpg
Now remove the four screws from the rear of the fascia of the climate unit, as shown below. Note the unit will not fall apart when these are removed, it is still clipped together.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40681.jpg
Once the screws have been removed very carefully pry the black fascia off, from each of the four clips one clip at a time, the 2 on top and 2 below. Be careful to ensure the board behind the fascia remains on the unit itself, and does not come away with the fascia, as it is physically connected permanently to the unit.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40691.jpg
Once that it removed carefully lift the front board up so you can see the underneath of the borad, without applying too much pressure to avoid damaged the wiring connected to the board from the unit.
Following that, locate the globe to be removed and twist it 1/4 turn to the left, then lift the globe out.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40701.jpg
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/rhys_fairall/AMC/diy%20climate/100_40591.jpg
Then simply insert the new globe, make a 1/4 turn to the right to tighten it in place, then rebuild the unit following these steps in reverse.
Hope this makes its easier for anyone needing to do this than trial and error, I know I sure as hell would have preferred a guide.
Shouldn't take you any more than 15-20minutes or so to do the entire thing, took me half an hour, but I had to pull 2 units apart, my replacement globe was in my old climate control unit.
Have fun guys n gals!

great write up!
(shame its no use to me, but still great writeup)
question - if you wanted to change the colour of the backlighting, you could do it by following these steps to get it apart and replace?
out of curisity - how many backlighting LEDs are back there?

those things are filament lightbulbs, not LEDs...?
they are small lightbulbs, not LEDs, they are also the same ones you'll find behind your instrument cluster (P,R,N,D...etc) well at least they look the same...

Looks like they are the same as the ones in the 2nd gen centre console (aircon, clock, etc...), which I've yet to find an LED replacement for; for that matter, in all my searching through lists of car bulbs, I've yet to see this globe type, so still don't know the code (same size as T5, but with trailing leads rather than wedge)

its a mitsu parts desk special, hehe :P
i once soldered LED/s directly to that type of flexi contacts those bulbs screw into.
If you do it quick with a good iron on low heat, it don't screw up the flexi layer.
Used 5mm LEDs that had a inbuilt resistor and could be hooked direct to 12V.
was too lazy to visit the mitsu dealer, as that would mean having to
reassemble the dash just to drive there then redismantle to install.
Yeah they're just small globes, I referred to them a couple of times as LED's in the guide just because they look so similar and I didn't think about what I was calling them, definitely not LED's.

If you want to replace the bulbs with LED's you will require,
2x T5 Neo Wedge - Display
2x T4 Neo Wedge - Controls

Does this mean they can be bought with the correct base? so we just clip the LEDs in like the fatory ones? If so, where is the best place to get them from?

Yes & Yes, search eBay for "T5 Neo Wedge".

And while you have the unit apart, take out the beeper, it used to annoy the crap out of me every time I pushed a button. I just don't understand why it needs to beep. You can keep the little speaker and put it back in later if you miss it.

I just sat down to change the bulbs to LED. instead of buying the T5Neon ones i decided to try to do it with a SMD LED type T5. I used the original socket that held the incandescent bulb in and by simply pulling the wire back through the socket and feeding the led in to the holes wrapping it back around the socket how the incandescent was held in. Only problem i had was that the panel only has 3 to 5 volts running to the lights and will not power up the led's properly. Looking into different LED's now

Lugo, love the write up, well done :)
Question - I am trying to determine how many of each globes are required. From your pics it seems there are 4 of the T5 Neo Wedge for the display and 9 T4 Neo Wedge for the controls. Does that sound correct?
The T4 globe,...are they simple twist in globes or do they need to be soldered in place?
Thanks heaps

You need two of each, T4 and T5,depending on who you get them from, and what type of led you get, as there are two types available, you will have to trim the tabs to make them fit in the holes... And, they just twist in, remember though, being an led, if it doesn't work the first time, take the globe out and turn it 180 degrees around.

Thanks Maggie3.5
That info surprises me as looking at the picture posted there appear to be a lot more globes.
Anyway I've ordered a number of the T4 and T5 white LED globes and will experiment to try and get the best effect.

I've given all manner of LED's a shot in the climate control display. Never had any luck, so can we get some pictures "before & after" style? It's go a long way to helping others decide of its worth the trouble.

Yeah just installed a set of LEDs into mine on Tuesday. Followed Lugo's write up and it works perfect. 2 T4 and 2 T5 Neo Wedge bulbs is all you need. My climate control switches are so much brighter now. And I'm getting a blue tinge to the display panel now, which is nice :-)

Three T5 on the trip and two T5 on stock fan/ac switches. Took a console apart at the wreckers today to check. Bought some T5 leds on ebay but had to adjust the copper prongs in the light housings to hold them. The stock glass globes have notches on them to hold the globe, the leds didnt. Havent installed yet but will probably place a little bit of gasket sealant to each led to hold it in. Will br a major PITA if i have to take it all apart again a months time because the globes have popped out... plus, if youre going to replace the globes on the stock a/c panel and switches, get single led as they are shorter. Inside the control there is a clear plastic piece that helpd disperse the light equally. This has a bubble window where the T5 globe comes in, but restricts the size of led you can use. I got 3 led globes and for this, they are too long, need to get the single. Dont get T5 neo(n) as they are wired, not the same as trip or cluster.
For the trip computer, 3 led globes look ok as they just slot into the empty space of the housing, same as the cluster... I would suggest buying the T5 neo? The led that comes with the twist in housing intact, as the existing housing is proving to be a real pain to adjust the copper prongs, to accomodate the new led globe...

hi the globes in my a/c switch and rear demister button switch are blown. the green light on the a/c button lights up to indicate the air con is running works but the backlight to the switch itself doesn't work. same with the rear demister switch, the backlight for the switch is blown and so is the orange light to say the rear demister is running also doesn't light up. i've had the demister on sometimes for 3 days. by the way, its not for climate control like you guys have but standard a/c in a tf exec. i've pulled apart the switches and the globes are tiny with little rubber backing plates it looks like. i'm wondering if these t4 globes you guys have links for will work cos the globes for the switches have 2 little copper prongs where they sit on inside the switch. the prongs are in the switch itself not on the globes. hoping someone may have some info or past experience with these switches. any info is appreciated guys.

You need to go to the wreckers and just grab a handful of switches, that's what I did.
Shudder to think what Mitsi would charge.
None of the T2/3/4 globes will work as they are too big.

i might have to do that. i'm gonna measure the globes inside the switches and compare with the t2/t3 globes. i will update this thread once i've done it so it can help others. i know for sure that there are te tf tj etc magnas with blown globes in their switches and u cant see them at night.
