Hi all,I've got a question.
I own a 2000 TH 3.5ltr magna, runs nice but has 160,000kms on it. Would an engine out of a 2002 vrx magna (72,000kms) fit into the TH?
I presume it is the same engine therefore no engine mount issues(?), but what kind of considerations would I have to take into account?
Would I have to change the ECU? etc.............
Cheers

The basic engine with your external gear will go in but to be honest, at 160k's your engine is barely run in so it would really be a waste of money. Bit like repainting your car cause it has dust on it.

In other words there pritty much the same engine. now on the other hand if you had a ralliart engine, that would be worth it.

The lure was an engine with less then half the kms and a base power increase of about 15kw, and the engine itself is only $500.

not sure about TH-TJ ... but with TJ to TJ VRX the extra kw came from the exhaust.
So swapping the engine wont give u the full extra kw... unless u take the exhaust also.

TH (all) 3.5 = 147kW, 300Nm
TJ VRX 3.5 = 163kW, 316Nm
So thats 16kW and 16Nm increase with a halving of the KM. lol
You will need a sports/VRX rear muffler (or any high flow aftermarket unit) and the ECU (if you want full potential) or an interceptor (piggyback) like a Unichip, Haltec Interceptor, Greddy EManage etc....
I'd keep you're stock ECU and hunt around for a suitable 2nd hand piggyback unit as it'll be easier in the end. If you decide the use the Sports/VRX ecu, you will need the TCU unit (if your car is auto) and the BEM (Body Electronic Module), furthermore you will need your keys reprogrammed to the new BEM code.
I have a spare VRX auto ECU, TCU, BEM and engine wiring loom if you need it, but it's designed for the 5speed Tiptronic.

drop some ralliart cams into your current motor which are somewhere around the $500 mark it would be cheaper to have these fitted than swapping a motor.....
change your rear muffler to a high flow job and you'll have a little bit more power when compared to only changing your motor to the vrx unit

Yeah it already has a redback muffler.
As for only the exhaust being the reason for the extra grunt, I'm not sure about that because the TH had 147kw compared 155kw for a base model TJ (it had slightly diff. cams I think). Plus I can't get the same fuel consumption out of the TH that I could out of the TJ I had (only about a litre difference on the highway 9.0 compared to 7.8)
Never mind I think it was more to do with the fact that this vrx engine had less then half the milage on it then the present engine.
It doesn't seem like it would be worth spending the money to get this done.

you should buy the VRX engine and do a ground up rebuild
you know cams, pistons etc. N/A monster ;)

the extra power in the VRX came from a free-er flowing rear muffler, that is it. If you buy the engine, i would do what others have suggested, and that is a full rebuild, and ralliart cams, or custom grind. you will have the some power as a VRX with the mods you have now.

I don't see the reason in rebuilding an engine with only 72,000kms :doubt:
I was trying to do this on a budget so ground up rebuild for a monster N/A engine is out of the question, but thanks for the suggestions guys/gals.
BTW where can I get a pair of ralliart cams from? and anybody know how much a set of lifters might set me back?
Cheers

use the 380 cams exactly the same as ralliart units, there around 270 a stick and nitred valve springs where around 10 each from memory.

I can get these from mitsubishi?

yes just ask them for the 380 camshafts and valve springs

If you rip the TH engine out and put the VRX engine in you will gain a whole 3kW.
TH 147kW to TJ Series 1 150kW was the result of a revised cam profile.
TJ S1 150kW to Series 2 155kW was a re-tuned computer.
TJ VRX/Sports Series 1/2 163kW was a muffler + the same tune that the Series 2 got.
So in a stock TH you would gain a whopping 3kW and lose maybe 1-2 grand.
Fail.

I think to sum this thread up.
JUST DONT DO IT

just put 380 cams, the valve springs ez's manifold some extractors, zorst and an interceptor/miniceptor much better way to spend your coin and hopefully depending on what the new manifold makes should get close to 150kw ATW compared to 150-163kw at the fly that the s2 vrx makes.

:stoopid:
its not just the engine itself that causes the increase in power
why bother!
if your engine is fine then why change it

in my opinion buy it :D have ur current engine in until say 200,000km and let the timing belt snap so u will need the new block(keep in mind u have 1-2 years depending on how many kms u travel to build a monster :D). by then, if i was in the situation u would have N/Aed the hell outta the vrx engine and then install that with a new timing belt :D im talking larger cams, pistons, strengthened internals etc etc. then you'd have nice gains :D just depends how much u wanna spend i guess.
however, if that doesnt appeal to u...i wouldnt bother
