has anyone here actually got a hi stall in their magna?
i'm looking at a 2.5-3 grand stall and would like some info on how it's going to be to drive and any issues there may be.
cheers for any info:cool:

As far as I know, no one on these forums has had an aftermarket stall converter installed in a 3rd gen V6 magna.

Knew a bloke who had a 2.5 grand stally in HSV R8 with a 4spd auto. The converter + stage 2 shift kit made the car feel a hell of alot quicker and dropped 3 tenths off his 1/4mile ET.

Does your powerband and max torque match the stall speed you want?,as this is what they are made for,as when you modify engines you usually send the powerband higher up in the rev range with cams and bigger valves etc therfore the stall speed needs to match or the car will be slow of the line as it has nothing down low anymore. If the vehicle is still stock to a degree the standard stall will be a better match for drivabilty as you will be missing out on 1000rpm of drive through slippage for bugger all gain

Also,a higher stall will always knock the edge of shift firmness,so that why you will find most will always fit a shift kit to bring them back up to a firmer shift, these types will usually chirp the tyres on upshifts etc and will actually help the trans last longer as it will reduce slipping in the bands etc

The only issues i see are if the converter is electronic lock up style and if this function is able to be retained, and if you can actually get one for these vehicles as i have never seen one nor a shift kit available, also a trans cooler is a must due to the extra heat produced from the converter slippage,i know most converters can be opened up and have the fin angle played with to increase stall, then are furnaced brazed for strength after the process, but you can only go so far with stock internals, but i got 2200 stall out of a standard V8 trimatic converter, that was enough to light up the tyres all through first and half way through second gear on a full throttle take off :D

As for driving with one,the car will feel slightly "doughy" under the stall speed in normal driving as it will still be slipping to a degree, but when the throttle is mashed to the floor form a standstill or is foot stalled ,this is where these things excell,it will flash up to probably 2500 rpm then launch, probably frying the tyres as you go,but all my knowledge and experience has been with old school V8 with converters that dont have interfering electronic ****,so these traits may not be the same due to shift softening etc that the ecu does to preserve the drivetrain etc,but certainly the principles are the same

hope it helps mate
