Hi,

today a mechanic quoted me $1300 to replace the 4 engine mounts in a 2000 VRX.
He added he will only use genuine parts and NOT aftermarket parts due to "vibration issues".
Is it just me being paranoid, thinking all mechanics are out to rip you off, or is $1300 exorbitant??
The car has done approx. 125,000 k
Would love some advice on the matter.

Cheers.

why do you need to replace all 4, when usually the right hand side (belt side) and rear mounts break. i have never replaced a left hand side (trans mount) in my whole 6 years of working at mitso. you can replace them yourself very easy to do.

I was under the impression that replacing one when they are all warn (some more than others obviously) would cause either premature wear on the new part and/or accelerated wear on the old parts...

the gearbox ones very rarely break and the rear is usally good to

the top RHS mount seem to break alot and the front is more likely to break

there not cheap genuine but $1300 you dont need to spend, you could go nolathane for that

you should get a second opinion

Do a check in the Queensland Forums.

I think that Megatron does exchange mounts or internal replacement parts.

Jaybus. Get a genuine drivers side mount ($220 from mitsu) or aftermarket ($115) and a trolley jack and some good 17mm deep 1/2" sockets and a breaker bar (they will be tight)

Jack up the engine to take the strain off the mount (jack under the sump - use a bit of timber to distribute the force. Undo bolts, remove mount, fit new one, tighten bolts. Its not hard at all, I did it last weekend.

Thats excatly how you do it. Just plus one to some good sockets, and make sure you got a deep 17mm one. I got cought out on Good Friday (lucky supercheap was open).

Only fiddly bit is getting the bolt to go back through the mount, means jacking the engine up/down slightly to get it through, but definitely do it yourself, it's not hard in the slightest and worth the saving.

Just on that part, I bought my Mount off Megatron, and had issues puttin it in at first. I quick check with my Calipers showed me the steel rod that came with it was a few mm longer than the standard, and simply was impossible to fit. Not sure if this happened to anyone else, it just may be my car moving over time or whatnot.

Anyway, 10seconds on a bench grinder, and It was a perfect fit.

I doubt you could tell the difference between genuine and aftermarket mounts.

I priced all the mounts the other day (Kelpro brand) and they were about half Mitsubishi's price.
All four mounts were about $300 trade or $450 retail

The rhs and the rear mount were only available as a complete assembly including the bracket but the front and trans mounts were available as either a full assembly or as an insert for about half the cost but you would need to get the insert pressed in.

I just replaced my rhs mount as the others were ok and didn't need replacing.

I did it myself in about 20 minutes but it would have been quicker and less painful if I had a 17mm deep socket.

You can tell the difference, you get a slight drone from the engine and a rougher idle but it's not unbearable, you get used to it after a while.

I've heard this about the urethane aftermarket mounts but I doubt it would apply to the OEM style rubber ones from kelpro etc.

oh, yeah, I figured aftermarket kinda implied urethane.
