Hey all,

First post here but not first visit. Been reading up alot on everyones comments very very informative place to be! Decided on a budget of up to 7k on a car. VT too agricultural for me, AU no comment, Camry a bit bland. So im going to buy another Magna/Verada.

With any luck, I am going to buy a 99 KH Xi I saw yesterday, silver, grey leather, 206k (high yes I know!), no service history but in fairly good nick. Interior needs good clean but not shocking, everything works and engine is smooth and so is gearbox. Only attention is new exhaust I think and front brakes.

Ill see how we go next week. Im not too concerned with the k's, I sold my 99 TH Advance with 277k on the clock and she was still going hard.

hmm 206k with no service history? not even proof of the 200k service? i'd be skeptical, and getting it checked over by everyone!

Yeah apparently not I was told.. K's arent the issue and that but I do plan on getting the mobile people to do a full check over for a couple hundred buck or whatever. They are asking $5500 for it, seems like a good price. Although I just read in another thread a dude paying $3700 for an KH ei at auction. That is friggin nuts

yeah some people get bargains

to be honest, i'd stretch ur car price to the best you can (you said $7k budget, get atleast a $6k reliable car), also have a look at the Ei models, all you miss out on is the sunroof and leather, which could mean you'll find better/newer car for your money (ie leather could be faded/ripped, sunroof could be buggered)

also make sure the latest service has been done (especially that 200k one if you go that car, as that means a new timing belt = around $800 service)

also, anyone else having a case of de-ja-vu with Lugo's verada? lol

Well, to tell you the truth I have just started looking and I really want a car soon so i guess im being hesitant.. I only started looking at Verada's because of this car, was turned off a KE Ei I saw at a dealer, 150k no books and they wanted $8900! Im like ah no dont think so.

The car has a few scratches here and there, body is straight as, all electrics work no problem at all and a/c is awesome. Leather is a bit cracked but looks like it needs a good clean. Rear parcel manhole is missing thats about it inside.

How can I check if $200k service done? Apart from asking LOL. Can RACQ check that at all?

ask the RACQ to have a look at the 3 platnum plugs located under the manifold as they would be replaced with the timing gear i think its the rule for this model...

ok cool let the mechanic look at that. Got 3 questions for everyone. A) are the pre purchase inspections worth the money? B) anyone bought a magna or verada with no books or history and it has served them well? And c) would you prefer a tj exec over a kh verada or th exec over a kf verada like u know what i mean? Prefer the model before but top of the range?

lol

I did do the same thing just 2 months ago, and I ended up with an Ei model purely because the Xi's that were cheaper within that price range (I had the same $7k budget) either had more wear and tear than you'd want to deal with, or some mechanical problem of sorts, and no I wasn't told by the seller when they had mechanical issues.

Not saying thats necessarily the case with the KH your looking at, but I'd certainly be getting it checked over, because its not exactly normal for someone to list a car for sale that has everything standard for less than its worth if its in perfect running order. If anything they usually list them for more than they're worth.

A) are the pre purchase inspections worth the money?
Yes, although I didn't get one done with mine, probably should have, but I cut the corner to cut costs.

B) anyone bought a magna or verada with no books or history and it has served them well?
Mine doesn't have all its history, but its got the major stuff and it drove well when I looked at it and it still does now.

c) would you prefer a tj exec over a kh verada or th exec over a kf verada like u know what i mean? Prefer the model before but top of the range?
I'd take the Verada in both instances. I'll happily drive a previous model to have one in good nick. I went out with the intentions of getting nothing older than a KF and a KH if I could, and ended up with a KE, just because it was a cleaner kept car and it gave me that feeling that it was the right choice when I drove it, and I haven't looked back yet. Go with your gut instincts when deciding what to get if theres a few good ones, that was the advice I was given by a couple of mates and its paid off.

$5500 sounds a bit much for a KH with over 200k's and no service history. I bought my 2000 KH Ei with 112k and full service history for $7500, $2000 for half the kms and service history sounds pretty good to me.

If you buy it, don't pay $5500, it's not worth that.

Thanks for all the replies guys, helping me alot to make my decision. I guess I am lured alot by the fact that its an Xi and ive always liked them. The leather, glass sunroof etc, just something nice.

All your comments are so true, im just looking back at my one, I sold my TH Advance 8mths ago with 277k for $4300, had no log books per se but it had receipts of work done etc. My paint was fading but had no oil leaks, and interior was 130% good.

I think im just being a bit hasty as i been driving around in a crappy 1986 Corolla with no a/c  and cant wait to get into something much better

That's why it's good to take someone impartial along, someone who won't be swept away by getting a new car, and is just there to help you make a good decision. I brought my cousin along when I was looking at my KH, and tbd he saved me probably $1000.

$5500 is far from a bit much for a KH, don't think for a second the red book gives you accurate pricing on what to pay for 3rd gens. People might say pfft thats only worth $5k, but realistically people will pay more than that for one, so what makes you think they'll take your offer of $5k because you say its only worth that when someone else will offer $6.5k or $7k say? Value comes down to what people are prepared to pay, and from my recent experience in shopping for Verada's I can tell you now its worth every bit of $5500, and probably more if its mechanically and visually A1.

This is da-ja-vu, I too had a 1986 AE82 Corolla without A/c, so I know what it feels like. I'd be trying to get something under 200k, just don't buy an Xi over an Ei because of leather seats without worrying at all about the mechanics of the car. Put it this way, it'll be cheaper in the long run to buy a mechanically A1 Ei Verada and add leather, than it is to repair an Xi with mechanical issues.

I agree, redbook can be too harsh sometimes, but $5500 for 206000kms with no history just seems a tad too high. With history (and the timing belt done) it would be a pretty good buy.

Definitely have the timing belt checked, if that hasn't been done it will need doing ASAP and will add quite a few hundred $$$ to the pricetag.

Leaving it this long in the tooth could also indicate neglect.

That ones looks a goodin, just a couple of points to note, if thats lowered its the highest set of lows I've ever seen (mine looks the same), and the interior will not be velour unless they changed it, otherwise that looks the goods, I'd make an offer low 6's for that, stress to them the rego is nearly out too.

Spackbace, thanks for the link no idea where that is, somewhere in Brisbane I think. Im in Gold Coast. Not bad though. Although I found a black 2000 ei, 118k + history for $7200. Owner is negotiable he said.

MitchellO and Lugo all fair points, I guess if I want the car ill get the mechanics to look it over then assess what needs fixing. If its mechanically sound and that I guess it would be a decent buy. But if the mechanic says this and that needs fixing, ill haggle the buyers to get the price down if they dont come to the party ill walk.

Lugo, my corolla is that light sky blue also LOL. I cant wait to get rid of it. I mean its reliable but I feel like im living in the 80's.

Link works fine. That's a KH Verada by the way not a KJ as listed. Very rare to see a black Verada.

The black verada is a clear winner, small k's looks clean as a whistle, the fact that they are moving away means you'll be able to rip the price down easily too.
