G'Day

Need some help regarding filters - i.e what brand(s)...

I searched and couldn't find anything specific.

I know it's kind of a minor thing but just interested to see what people use. I've heard Wesfil/Cooper are good?
Mobil 1 high efficiency oil filters are meant to be really good but not available in Aust. (at least not directly)...

Cheers.

Either Ryco or Cooper seem quite good. I've used both, and them seem to be equally well made and do what they're supposed to.

Air - K&N

Fuel & Oil - Ryco/Cooper/Mitsu even Repco brand ones are good, really it doesnt matter as long as it does its job.

I sometime use the PuraOne filters from supercheap, very expensive, but certainly seem quality. Seen a few test on them too and they came out pretty good. I did see the same brand im quite sure a Malz once, and surpised at the cheap price, however the filters were definitely different, and didnt seem as good quality, so they must make standard filters too.

I actually started a thread once, I wanted everyone to cut open their filters and take pics to compare. I did it to a valvoline one and I think one of those PuraOne filters. Might need to do a search.

To be honest though, dont think it would make a huge difference anyway, though I still buy the better quality if available.

yeah getting hard to find the pureone filters now as they have stopped making them for the 3rd gens, i use a valvoline oil filter and so far no issues.

I always tend to use the Repco brand as there down the road from me never had an issue with then.

After an oil change and new filter, and just because the donk is still running OK, doesn't mean the filter was 'quite good' or 'really good'. The simple fact is the average bloke would not ever know.
This can only be determined in a lab where the filtration medium can be microscopically examined to determin the size of the particles of contamination which it can or has caught.

A lot after market filters are made in South Africa, Ryco comes to mind. I think I saw S.A. on a Valvoline box as well. G.U.D. make the Ryco ones and also make the Faff which are a lot cheaper, but come out of the same machine and are only painted black. Both have the same die stamp number inside.

Do a search on google, I have seen some interesting reports written on oil filters.

For the average bloke, and 99% of the population, we aren't gonna go to the point of doing tests on our oil filters. If it keeps the oil clean enough that it continues to keep our cars running, i think it'll be right.
That said, i wouldn't want to get one that would damage my car, but spare parts shops (autobarn, repco etc) only really sell reputable brands. What do you think mechanics use? They get parts couriered by the closest spare parts shop.

Why not buy the genuine Made in Japan item from your nearest dealer, they're like what $8

Coopers leak 99% of the time. Every car i've ever worked on with a Coopers filter has the filter covered in oil regardless of how tight it is.

coopers, ryco and westfil are all made and owned by GUD however.

Ryco are garbage now, no better than the Valvoline junk. Cut some filters open and have a look, the Ryco/Valvoline filters have about half as many paper pleats as others, which means they'll clog and bypass sooner.
The Repco filters are pretty damn good, like an old Ryco as far as number of pleats goes.
I love the Purolator filters (they always score very high in all the testing), but finding them in Z456 is proving tricky. When I do, I'll buy a 12 pack though (I picked up a 12 pack for teh Volvo for $50 delivered off Ebay).

Regards, Andrew.

There the ones I was talking about, first oil change I did supercheap didnt have any for my car, 2nd I got some other brand because Malz didnt sell them and I didnt go to supercheap coz they dont sell Penrite synthetic 'Sin' oils. :doubt:

That sounds pretty cheap what you got from ebay, might have to keep an eye out also.

I only ever buy filters off Ebay now, parts stores are just gouging too much for my liking these days. They KNOW you want teh filter right now and price accordingly. Trust me, I know what cost price is for a filter...
I prefer to carry stock these days, and buy multi packs from people who have overstocked, can't sell them or whatever.
As for the statements earlier about a filter "must be good, coz teh engine is still O.K". Well consider this, when a filter reaches a certain backpressure (due to being full of gunk) it will activate the bypass on the oiling system. So, now you are no longer filtering oil, just pumping it round teh engine crud and all. A cheap filter, with less filtering media area will clog faster than a quality filter with much more surface area, which is why I am looking for a longer replacement for teh Z456 as I am running synthetic oil, and would like a filter I can TRUST to go to 15k kms between changes.
The teensy little Z456 just doesn't have enough filtration media for me, I am considering a mid service filter change in the future if I can't find a decent replacement.

Regards, Andrew.

you could always run an adapter plate and a remote mounted filter that has a higher filter volume. I remember the filter on my pulsar, i think it was almost as big as a z30/z9(old falcodore filter) and then saw the one on the magna, damn its tiny.
