Probably coolant but could be (but unlikely) dye from your AC if it was put in last regas.
On the firewall in the engine bay you should see 2 heater hoses going in.
Follow them back to where they come from. Find yourself a piece of heater pipe that will go between these 2 source points. Disconnect the 2 pipes that go to the firewall and run the new pipe between the 2 outlets on the engine.
This will bypass the heater for the moment until you can get a heater core and do the full fix. It will last indefinately and wont cause any engine problems but it will mean no toasty warms on the cold days.

mine was leaking too.
was told around the $600 mark roughly as previously stated the amount of labour that has to go into it.
to stop the leak they just bypassed the heater.
so no more leak but i cant use my heater but its no biggy

It should take you no more than 1-2 hours tops to get the entire dash out.
It took me 1.5 hours, and I've since put it in, taken it out again, and then replaced it again :P
I don't know whats involved with getting the heater core replaced, but if you know how to replace it, I suggest you get the workshop manual, and take the dash out and DIY, and save yourself a few 100 bucks.
God if I was out your way I'd help you out for a case of beer or something. Removing the dash just isn't as difficult as people think.
EDIT: For those interested, I might put up a DIY dash removal thread in the next couple of weeks, when I get a chance.

You have just dobbed yourself in man, Mine has a very very slow leak and guess whos going to be coming around to help me get the dash out :bowrofl:
Not anytime soon though man, it has leaked approx 50mL in 6 months (like I said, very very slow), all I do is put a bit of bi carb soda under the carpet every 3 months and it soaks it up and stops the smell.
