View Full Version : Is it possible to use tr/ts automatic for tp auto
TP Drifter

Automatic Gearbox stuffed. I want to get 2nd hand box to swap over.
Is the tr / ts 4 or 6cyl version gearbox the same? Will i need the transmission control unit from the donor car?.
Also need to know, if anyone has had problems with the tp/tr tcu. (not ecu).

I think 2nd gen 4 Cylinder trannys will go in, but not the V6.

Thanks for your replies.
Tr - ts's have the same wheel size as tp. I looked at the lancer & hyundi but the wheel size is smaller and the gear ratios may be different. The tr has the same engine, just need verification that the wiring loom would also fit b4 i buy gearbox.

TM-TP rims are a 4 stud x 14
elite is 15 stock
TR-TS are a 5 stud

essentially anything is addaptable. i recently changed my TP box to go on my TN loom
Went from square plugs to round, most was unbolt, snap in, had to cut and cut 3 wires cause the solenoids came through the casing.

Yes deanimus you are right they are 5 stud. I do not want to use the drive line. But this poses another question would the gearbox output splines be compatible. I am thinking to buy whole tr-ts from the damaged auction in welshpool which can be had for around 200 dollars. Transplant engine and gearbox. V6?? oh yeah... no, to much work.

V6 Will not fit the first gen engine bay. Transmission is not compatible either as the physical shape is different and the TCU/loom is different. Engine mounts are also in different locations and are different styles.
You may also find (although I haven't checked) that the gear ratios are slightly different, as the second gen 4 cyl has a different intake, injectors, cam and ECU. This isn't a major problem, but may create some strange shift patterns that may not be as smooth as they should on a first gen engine.
Easiest way would just be to rebuild the current transmission or find a second hand one in decent condition and recondition that...

wrong it has alredy been done in N.Z.
they were called v3000's and they had the 2nd gen v6 in them, plus the v3000's are an inch shorter(in width) than our magna's so it can be done.
there's plenty of threads about them:D

Apparently the V3000 is 65mm narrower and 40mm shorter :)

there you go even more than one inch. learn something new everyday cos i didn't know that they were shorter as well. wonder what they weight compared to magna. hmm lighter and a v6 now that would be fun, throw on a turbo and that would be a cool sleeper.

Magna 68KG heavier, one of the reasons they gave for widening was to fit the 2.6 litre motor, is the 2 litre shorter? Why they didn't fit the V6 is a mystery. got this stuff from Wheels mag April 1985 :)

Are you saying the car is physically shorter? or is the engine shorter. I would guess that the v6 combo would be heavier. Too much stuff to change over, as this is only a work car. Would be a good project though. Don't have the time at the moment, doing vt...then cordia.

NZ got the v6 1st gen and i bet they wish they got the RWD R31 and the Rb30e powered VL ( they got the rb20e ) and i THINK they got a 4 cyl VN too haha.

just about to do your conversion on the tn auto here could you please tell us the procedure you took
magna buff

Id be intrested to know the conversion method used by astron boy as well
the torque converters and TCUs and ecu of TN and TP are different from each other
To just use the wiring loom of the TN
you have to know the wiring loom colours are different for both boxes
and spend a lot of time to make it work
is the power/ economy function of the TP box working in the astron boy TN

Hey mate, sorry i only read your first post, none of the others but if you havnt had any Proper answers yet, I had an Old 1991 TP Wagon with the Astron II, The auto Box completly Rooted itself, So i got one out of a 1992 TR Magna with the same engine and got Armadale Auto Trans to Put it in for me, they had to Change the Wiring but only took them 2 days to do. So your best bet is find them and Ask if they can do it for you
I only ever had one problem with the Gearbox and that was sometimes my Overdrive Turned itself on or off..

hmm i thought that the v3000 would be longer, but i dont have a clue really, just looking at the longer nose on the front, and well i can tell you that having a v6 in a first gen is nothing short of awsome!!! i mean ive driven heaps of different cars with v6,and there are some impressive ones at that, but mine is fun to drive, and feels like the weight of a four banger in the front, its very nimble, and the launch is awsome!never get sick of it.ive had a 94 honda integra, 99 diamante sports,92 mazda eunos 500,93 honda orthia but with the v3 its cruzie, looks good, and more satisfying to drive, the diamante was a good car too

Okay, long time no post, and I'll give you guys and anyone else who will do this in the future an FYI.
the gearbox was already bolted to the engine, We removed dead engine with gearbox attached from Sedan
Good engine and gearbox from wagon went into sedan, all EFI stuff was bolted on.
The shifter mechanism was removed the TNs box and fitted to the TP box.
the other little looms that connect everywhere on the box were also unplugged and swapped with the TNs
All the wiring is the same, only the connectors are different.
There are a couple of extra wires, and another sensor which will not get used when plugging the TN looms onto the TP box.
But
All in all the process works.
I had to cut one or 2 wires and fit a plug as it was hard wired onto the box, but otherwise, easy process.
Yes, the torque converter and all that cannot be interchanged, but the communication between the TN-TP is the same from the TCU, minus the extra wiring not used for PWR/ ECO.
the box is just always in ECO.
Probably haven't typed that in the best fashion to understand it easily, but ehh.
As for the v3000, yes it is narrowed and smaller, it's the same as Tefos car, which I also have a front cut of in my back yard. 65mm narrower.
The shorter aspect is only bumpers as the AUS had lips, the galants had flush.
