Remove the cluster surround (two small screws up top), slide it out, unscrew cluster, pull cluster out. it's really easy once you do it you'll realise. should only take like, 5minutes.

It can come out with the needle in, just gotta take your time, but, yes, it is easer to take it out, as they not thick and will snap very easy

Actually your right....think i have done it a few times with the needle in.....pretty sure i got pee'd off as it was going to snap almost every time so yeah just yanked it out, causes less stress in the end

what you should actually search for is T10 wide angle LEDs (x4) and T5 leds (x2)just makes the search quicker and will show up more options. if only mitsu had used standard globes in the back of the dash, we wouldnt have to jury rig stuff just to keep consistent, cant have blues in the cluster and yellow in the dash looks retarded. unless you have lots of blue glowage from your interior neons:D

Yeah I still need to get the T5 LEDs. But I wasn't going to go getting extra lights until I knew that they would at least look decent in the dash first.

i got my 6 t10s and (2 to replace the ashtrays in the rear doors) and 2 t5s for 22$ including postage so i think i did ok...i mean you take 20 bucks out shopping you dont really think twice about spending it.
oh and the 5s are the most important part, they make a huge difference, for a start you get a dimmer! :P, if was going to do it again and could only get one or the other id prabs get the 5s as it would be cheaper (that or disconnect the globes in the 5s spot and put the 10s in)

I went to Jaycar to get mine, grabed some resistors withsuper bright led's, soldered them to the original globe holders with resistos, bent them over to get rid of the hot spots and they looked awsome

Just a question, are the any laws with regard to having these lights?

depending on what state ur from, i dont think there are many issues with the colour of dash lights. i thought it was only lights that could distract oncoming traffic.
btw. what are the exact things to look for and what do i need to get so i can do the same thing to my tr ?
do i need to get T10 bulbs?

t10 is the LED(globe also?) size- they are for in the back of the instrument cluster.
edit: you need 4 of these minimum
the t5s are the ones that shine from infront.
edit: 2 of these ones
the only thing apart from the LEDs/globes youd need is a bit of patience, took me three goes to get all mine in and working (first time had three LEDs with wrong polarity[didnt think it mattered???] and the second the led wasnt pushed into the holder quite far enough). note the lights in the back of the dash are different as far as i know according to rogue streak they are not like a standard globe and will be hard to replace, though spose it doesnt really matter.

Yeah, polarity matters, just chuck them in, pop the cluster back in, switch on your lights and take note of which ones work and which don't. Pop it back out, turn the ones that didn't work 180, and bob's your uncle.
There are quite a few bulbs in the instrument cluster, but as Stormie etc said, the main ones are the 4x T10s at back and the 2x T5's at the top front. The others are the likes of blinkers, park brake, check engine, etc., so wouldn't bother with them (unless they are blown of course, and I'd still stick with cheap incandescents)
The centre console is where you'll find the weird bulbs, failing LED replacement mine currently sport red silicon covers. Could do with more brightness though (I run my dimmer at about 50% due to my instrument LEDs being too bright for my liking at a higher setting, which means the centre console is conversely a bit too dull)
One day I'll get around to soldering up with some high-power LED replacements, maybe if the demand is there I'll start producing a few...
