hey all,
went to start the car this morning and all i got was click and then no power. played around with the battery terminals with no avail. tried again but all i got was a click from the starter motor
had to clutch start it, which was successful however there was a loud whining sound.
im assuming the starter has shat itself and the spring has pushed the gear to the flywheel thus the whining noise.
can get a new starter no worries however wanna make sure thats the problem.

BATTERY IS FINE

any other suggestions/ideas?

Don't know much about the 4's but is there an inspection plate for the ring gear. I have this available on another car of mine. This would help you check to see if you had buring on the gear.
You seem to have some idea as you mention the spring letting go. Why not remove the stuffed one and bench test it. If it doesn't return the gear drive then it is not disengaging and you have solved it.
Is teh starter motor for yours the same as first gen? If so check out a hyundai excel X3 one. Or go to supercheap $35.00 i think was the last one we got for the hyundai.

As you may well know the starter has its own little clutch in it, its in the smaller cylinder attached to the starter.

I had a laser that would just click like that. I would have to try turning the key to start whilst simultaneously hitting the starter with a hammer, it worked, for a few months...

I inspected the starter today
and the ring gear and solenoid looked ok

smelt burnt out - the brushes didnt have much left

so go the replacement .no one like to be stranded
