Having delivered the TS Mags to my olds, the old man made a comment he thought it had a transmission whine - i told him that it was the engine and every Astron I have driven all made the same sound.

Now, having thought about it more i suspect it may be the balance shafts and a chain responsible for the whine type sound these motors make due to the high speed they spin at. Or maybe its a particular ancillery makign the noise?

Is it actually normal, or have managed to only encounter noisy Magnas?

not all, some that i have heard don't have the wine (not as bad), but you can always tell if one is coming down the road

Our TR astron doesn't have any sort of whine to it

unsure of yours, but mine have always ticked and make a sound like a hoover.
the only bad noise i have are a 20ur old collapsed cat, and a bad passenger driveshaft., wouldnt call any of the sounds a whine tho...

but mm, fresh good astrons all do have a distinct sound from every other engine

Uploaded the sound of my TS. Check out the link  Is that the 'whine' you are talking about. I had the window open so after the initial acceleration all you can really hear is wind, until a bit more acceleration at the end. Thats how it has always sounded, has low KM's and hasn't been thrashed too much lol So i guess its just a normal sound.

Heh heh lol Nice work! Thats the sound all right. I always picked it an engine noise i didnt worry about and was unsurprised to hear in a motor with all those chains and roller rockers etc. My gf thought it had a very friendly talkative sound, just happiely chatting away on the progress of the trusty Magna :)

I am used to alloy block motors with solid rockers - they are a LOT noisier than the iron block/hydraulic lifters setup in the Mags!! My Renos probably have a bit of a whine to them too, but its not heard over the racket of the pistons/rockers :)

haha yeh it's perfectly normal.
someone on the forums described it as a "vacuum making love to a blender" and after having a proper listen to mine i hafta agree hahahaha

Its astrons mate, straight own, owned 3 in 3 different setups, all made the same noise, pretty sure its something funny like a pully on the alternator or something that makes it. QUALITY ENGINE :D

The Auto magna's tend to do it more than the manuals because of the gearing in the box, is yours auto or manual?

Its a slugomatic. Mum needed an auto because of a dodgy left knee.

Its proving to be the perfect car for her - big and soft enough to deal with the rough roads (ongoing arguments with the local council to grade the road. again.. ), big enough to load hay bales/dogs/assorted farmy stuff in the back comfortably, and able to tow a modest load without lurching all over the place. Mum finds its a breeze to drive and even announced she found it easy to reverse park (better than me..... ). And even in the country, the local wreckers have bits for it uber cheap.

Its off to have LPG bolted in a fortnight, and then its off on a 4 week roadtrip to QLD!!!

In all in all a bloody bargain at $1600!!!!!!!!!!!

It's like subaru rexs, i can tell when they are coming, aftermarket exhaust or not from the engine note, i can also tell if there is an astron near by, alot of people can tell when they are coming and just know it as the magna noise.

Didn't know it was that common, i'll have to keep an ear out for one. lol

Our TR 2.6 has never rattled, met someone else who had a TM without the rattle as well. Plus one for rebuilt motors. Still doesn't put up a fight against the sound of our Chrysler EDZ 2.0L motor though... nice deep note.
