Howdy all
A quick recap from Bushman's great thread I accidentally hijacked.
My TF had a collapsed driver seat base and needed to have the foam squashy cushion bit replaced as the wire frame had broken through it.
I rang Zupps parts and they confirmed NLA status for the original TF seat as a part however they suggested the TH seat foam base (P/N MR920556) might suffice.
Well the good news is that it was a perfect replacement.
The less exciting news is that (unless you are a motor trimmer) it is a pig of a job to install.
You have to release the old seat cover from the metal base, then prize open the steel rings that tie down the fabric to the metal skeleton in the foam base. These steel rings are very strong and you have to be careful not to damage the fabric as you do it.
Then once you have the fabric removed you have to peel the metal subframe away from the old foam base for use with the new foam base. This is held on with the strongest glue on earth. The old foam leaves big chunks behind which have to be painstakingly picked off with a knife.
Once the frame is cleaned up, you need to attach the new foam pad to the metal base with a suitable glue (like Kwik-Grip). Then comes the most horrible part of all, reattaching the fabric to the new foam base. Basically, stitched in steel rods serve as tensioners for the fabric to keep it taught. Getting these steel rods linked to the metal frame contained in the foam using the steel rings is sheer hell. I found it hard to smile while doing this although I did cheat and use zip ties.
That's the toughest part over all you have to do is wrap the vinyl back under the base, and put it back in the car.
Looks like new and feels great to sit in!

Stupid question....but why didn't you just hunt around for a set of seats in the same trim?

You're both right.
I rang around the wreckers and emailed interstate ones too but no-one had any. Would have been the preferred option for sure.

Fair enough at least you explored that avenue.
Was it expensive to get it refoamed?

Hey
The foam was actually a spare part from Zupps (Mitsubishi Brisbane dealership). The P/N MR920556 was about $82 inc gst. The foam encapsulates a metal skeleton that the fabric hooks onto.
cheers

Thanks for this mate. The bolster on the RHS of the seatbase of my TF Sport has lost all its shape and I was wondering how hard it was to change the foam. Now I know it can be done and the results are great I'll be dropping down to my dealer on Monday to order the foam. Thanks again :)

all this and no before/after pics..
story: when i was workin in a car yard they used to buy back rental cars after they had had them for 6 or 12 months.. and in the fleet thre were always peugeot 307s and some of the seat bases in those had collapsed - mainly the bolsters..
quite often had to get them re-foamed.. think it was around $150 all up for an upholsterer to do them (they used their own foam tho coz the genuine pug ones were not only expensive but would take 3 years to come out from france)

As a ex-motor trimmer I am with 6sik6trimming on that.

And for those of us that are not motor trimmers, this would be quite a daunting task.
Kind of like if i asked you to set up Microsft Server with full DHCP and Active Directory with the permissions for the various groups set.

Hi TN88 / 6sik6trimming
Definitely a job for one who knows what they're doing! I'd say it took me about an hour, there were hog rings flying in all directions. I thought about before and after photos throughout the saga too. But it didn't really look different, just felt better to sit on!
Not a bad job for a IT guy!
LOL

Hey Articuno
I think we might be in the same job. My condolences. I'll get you to do the passenger seat if you want! That way they will be the same!!

+1!
My TH has the same problem, too ... extended wrecker research revealed that my trim style is somewhat rare, and consequently there are bugger all around in any condition. A guy was selling one on eBay a while ago but it was very stained - made mine look new. So, funnily enough, there's a couple of strange-looking foam things sliding about in the back of my wife's car, ready to be installed under the existing trim (I decided I might as well replace the seat back as well as the base). I'm not game to do it myself tho - kudos to you for getting amongst it. :)

Look forward to seeing the pix form when you all do it. Then when mine falls apart, I can redo it properly!

Sorry to exhume this thread. Thought you might like to know that the new seat actually took time to settle in. It didn't feel right for a few weeks but now it's really comfortable.
So if you re-do yours, you may find you need to allow a little 'wear in' time. A bit like new shoes.
cheers
