Hi guys.
Im doing the head gaskets on my girlfriends KS Verada 3.0. The poor thing has had a pretty hard life and a few of the hydraulic lifters have worn through the face. Im expecting them to be quite dear, so I was wondering if I could have a search down the self serve wreakers for some reasonable ones. are 4 cylinder ones the same?
Ive also noted that the camshaft bearing surfaces are quite scored I suspect from lack of oil. it doesnt seem to bother it so I might just leave them, but I just thought Id ask if anyones got some standard cams in good condition they would part with. I dont know if you can get aftermarket cams for these motors?
Is there much room for decking of the heads? I figure if Im going to get it done anyway Ill get a bit more compression into it.. Its on LPG 90% of the time anyway. the valves look like they're on quite an angle, is the PTV clearance close?
cheers fellas.

Um Lifters cost me i think $12ea from bursons about 1.5years back.
Cams can be had but are bloody pricey. Think your looking at the $1K bracket.

haha so I guess I wont be putting a big duration cam in it.. oh well. my girlfriend would complain if it lumped anyway.
$12 each lifter adds up!

Barry_v, I presume, by bearing surface scoured you mean the cam lobes?
I would not be happy installing new lifters on to worn scoured cam lobes.
Some engine recon shops used to re-grind worn cams. Don't know if they still offer this service.

the thing the 6g72 has going for it is it's a roller cam arrangement so the lifters won't be putting a huge stress onto the cam so therefore new lifters with an old cam shouldn't be a problem
don't try it with normal flat tappet cam though as broken lobes will be the result

Lets get back to some bacics here
To begin with, they are not lifter, they are lash adjusters and yes, about $12 ea sound right. You can get anything from sigma right through to later model magna, they are all the same. Lifters run on the cam, the lash adjusters do not contact the cam at all.
Secondly, I am assuming that you are talking about where the cam sits in the head. scoring is very common, without seeing it I would say leave well enough alone in an older engine if not too bad, if bad, get some complete heads, about $40 each from self serve wreckers here in vic, do not know where you are though.
If running on LPG, get the guides checked, this will be where most of the wear is, again perhaps some shand heads, get them shaved, stem seals and put these in, may end up cheaper then doing all your vales.
Try and avoid second hand lash adjusters, they will ususally end up tapping worse then those you already have as they are not seated to the valve stem.
Be VERY careful when you get your valves seated, if they take too much off the seal, you may have an issue when you put on your rocker gear where the valve is not closed as the valve stem sits up too high, i the machine shop knows what they are doing, they will check the stem length and adjust accordingly.

its perfectly acceptable to run old flat tappet cams with new lifters. its the other way around - if you use old lifters on a new camshaft you will most likely wipe a lobe off. fortunatly flat tappets are dirt cheap as a rule lol

How did the diffs go? BTW, I ended up getting a roller lifter 302 in the end :)
If you have any more q's about the Magna, feel free to MSN or PM me as I am sure I can help.
U pullit in elizabeth have heaps of the second gen v6 so you will not be short on parts there

yep, phil has sold the XC ute now. upgraded to a flat black F100 ;)
the diffs were fine as far as i know, i think one ended up in the ute before he sold it, he kept the 9" from it for something else. did you use fuel injection or carby on the roller block?

Still have the other 302 in the car, is a very sweet motor but this one I picked up (only picked up on the weekend) has only had 160k's, came complete with all engine gear down to the alt, his ex tossed out the loom and ecu but am onto a manual loom and ecu for a reasoable price. Next I have to cut out the boot floor as I want to fit an EB wagon tank. Have measured and will be a nice fit if I use the drop down from the EB (mrs aint happy as it is her car getting cut up lol) just have to find a nice EL fairmont wagon for her first or a nice third gen verada perhaps
When we are over next, hopefully will be done and will bring it over to show you.
