good suggestion would be not to turn it on?

could be anything, but given there's a noise and it still runs probably a big end bearing.

It was sluggish, just seemed to happen suddenly. On first start this morning. First I thought it was dirty fuel then I heard the mech-loose-noise.

Yeah i hate to be the bearer of bad news.. most likely the bearings in the bottom end.. looks like new engine time or rebuild..

Id ring mits to see what a short motor is worth.. Rumour has it you will be knocked off your feet when you price it.. Scwish got one and was cheaper than a rebuild.. was rather cheap for a brand new motor from mits.:)

I was expecting the motor may last another 6 months. I'll check out some prices tomorrow, may be lucky on a rebuild. thanks for your comments.

Have a look on Ebay. Sometimes there are long 3.0 litre 3rd gen engines for about a grand.

Would a compression test reveal anything?

Definately start with a compression test.

If you've done a piston 1 cyl will read **** all pressure.:)

Time to evaluate your position. How's the rest of the car at that mileage. Pre-loved Magnas are great value. Think about it before hitting the B.I.N button.

Just my thoughts

The car is in VG condition. Repalced the CV shafts, Radiator. Kept up with servicing. Been a damn great car.

On the subject of replacing the engine. What would be the estimation "Life" of the Automatic gear box?

It depends on how well the box has been treated and maintained but i know that if you get 180,000 out of a 4 speeder from a VT or an AU you are doing well so my guess is those are the sort of kms you should reasonably expect. Maybe yours has had a reco on fitted in the past?
