Thinking about a new engine for my TH, What would be the "life" in KM's of an Automatic gear box? This also, I need to consider.

Is this one of those riddles that ends up giving me a headache?, id have to say i dont think there is a "life Expectancy" of an automatic transmition, it all depends on servicing, the way it was driven and the conditions of use. hope that helps

exactly true

altho, you can get low km transmissions that have been flogged to death in such a short length of time that they cant possibly expect to live on for much longer.

when looking for a transmission - try to get one with as low kms as possible, and smell (yes smell) the transmission fluid dip stick. if it smells 'burnt' then itl need a flush and if its a low km car with burnt transmission oil, there *might* be an issue with it starting to fall over itself.

idealy its best to be able to DRIVE the transmission you intend upon buying, but unfort thats not always possible if its already been removed from the car! lol

transmissions if cared for correctly, should outlast the engine that its bolted to (IMO)

I have one at home that has done 200,000km and still runs fine. It was a company car when i bought it- so mostly highway driving, and i haven't flogged it, so as serviced regularly I would expect it to last a while yet. Only removed it due to manual conversion.

PM me if you're interested in a cheap replacement- just taking up room at my house...

In falcons they have a life expectancy of about 450 before they start slipping and generally going crap. This is kinda tested though since it's a taxi car. For the magna I would probably assume the same.

the AU chews through transmissions - the E series used to have transmissions that lasted longer - even with the EF i think it was, with no dipstick in the engine bay for the tranny fuild (people didnt know they had a small stick under the car at the tranny!)
(iv had auto ZLs that still had the transmission they left factory with - and the odo was ticking over the 400,ooo mark and they where running fine.)

its like all things though really a transmission will last as long as you want it to - provided that you look after it along with the rest of the car.

they do occasionally need to be dropped outa the car and have adjustment made, but thats all part of the course esp when you have a high mileage auto...

The magna autos after TE are sort of pot luck. You get ones that have done low kms and stuff up even when driven normally. Theres others that last for ages.

My TJ has only done 100k km and I never thrash it and the box is already flaring/shifting crap into 3rd. Even after the oils been done.

Some of the faults are actually a fault of the ECU and not the trans itself. Which I think is the problem with mine.

wishful thinking the ones with no dipstick in the engine bay had no dipstick at all, it was a case of filling till it just dribbled out the filler hole

im terribly sorry, but i believe that you are incorrect on that one.
they had a baby / tiny / small / short etc dipstick in the transmission, which is of course the filling point.
as a driveway boy at a servo, i used to have to check customers oil/water and one time this dude asked me to check transmission fluid too - no dipstick in the bay.. hmm.. its under the car - i need you to crawl under and check it for me!
ended up getting under there and sure enough there is a tiny dipstick attached to the transmission which is also your filling point.
told him it was fine, when really it needed a LOT adding to it - sif make me climb under your friggin car im not the mechanic. hehe

anyhow, back to original topic.
keep fluids up to them, flush them and the transmission will go on for a very long time :)
just gotta get a second hand / recod one thats been cared for - thats the hardest part.

well ur both right! some of the falcons had a dipstick in engine bay, some had just a filler plug! and some had a dipstick on the tranny! crazy ford ppl lol
