View Full Version : 6.5 inch drivers need enclosure?

Ok here's the thing, i've been through 2 sets of 6x9's and i'm sick of it. Problem is the bass in the boot is just destroying them too quickly.

I plan to seal off the hole and put in some speaker pods over the top, only problem is i'm not sure how big the pods need to be?

Another idea i've had is to create my own mini boxes coming off the 6x9's, seen as they only run mid bass would this be an issue? Would prefer not to lose too much boot height.

Has anyone had success fixing this situation? I don't want to remove the rear speakers as i like the surround sound.

Another idea i had was creating a 6x9 dome that sat over the bottom of the hole, then mounting a pod on the parcel shelf to house some 6.5 inch splits (to save on abit of height both ways). Would this work ok? Or do the drivers need a fairly large cavity to play midbass well?

Or even better... a pre made solution... Bigs has designed and is making pods to hold 5.25" speakers on the back parcel shelf which would solve your problem with minimum hassle and look good!

See this thread:

If you really want to keep the rear speakers, i would make a box for the 6x9's within the boot, that way it looks alot cleaner and protects the speakers.
It might be a bit tricky, but not impossible.

I would suggest not worrying about having the 6x9s and only having fronts, but i know you like it from the rear

Take a leaf from Pauls book and make a custom fibreglass parcel shelf lol

How exactly are the subs destroying the 6x9"s?

The air pressure from the subs pushes the cone of the 6x9s and potentially can damage them if the pressure is enough.

Only problem is the 3rd Gen boot hinge setup. There is a very annoying bar which travels across just below the magnet of the 6x9s which leaves you with very very little space. You would be pushing to make a box fit if you had a half decent magnet on the speakers. I have some average size 6x9s (which never get used lol) and they only JUST clear.

Bingo, has destroyed 2 sets of 6x9's so far :(.

lol i'm afraid to ask how you know this :P.

A custom parcel shelf isn't a bad idea, but it will cost money and i believe the visibility out the back of a 3rd gen is worse than that of a 2nd gen (due to a more sloping rear window). So i don't want too much sticking up.

Right now i'm thinking of doing a crossover of ideas, having a small box under the 6x9 hole, and getting a custom pod made to fit over this.

Keep the ideas flowing :).

Would the material the speaker is made of change the likelihood of damage? I've seen 6x9"s around with I think aluminium cones for instance? No idea what the sound quality would be like though.

Leave the 6x9's hole empty.

Mount splits / co-axials in the rear doors. At least that way it wont impact on your front stage to much however that still depends on where you mount them.

Possibly but the way i see it no matter what the cone is made of, it's still sitting there loose so any force/pressure is going to move it against it's will. Not sure exactly what gets damaged, but the speaker starts to get crackly and cut out from time to time.

Well I ran 2x Sony 6x9's which where crappy ( till I took them out!! ) and I had a Boston 12.5lf, Boston G5 and Hertz HXS and none caused any damage. I think you will find it is the power source... headunit or amp? Do the speakers smell? :bowrofl:

lol nah speakers don't smell, and pretty sure my last set of 6x9's i blew were on a different amp anyway. The gains aren't high enough to come close to their rms value.

Interesting, the only other thing I can think of in the tinsel leads or the connection. Are they ok? Anyways who cares, no more 6x9's for you....

If you want round speaker why not mount them on top of your sub box in their own little boxes firing up?

or you could open up the ski hole to reduce pressure

Ski hole doesn't get closed, still too much pressure.

I would it's a connection problem Mr Char, probably in the tinsel leads. Having them in the boot firing up has no point, only used the 6x9's for mid and treble.
