Just like the thread in 3rd gen.
I'll start:
Annoying squeak that has started in the last few days in the bottom corner of A-pillar.
Big turning circle.
My gas strut bolt for my wagon back has come off, its gonna snap soon.
Lack of bottom end torque when accelerating from standing.
The fact the my dash seems to collect and hold ALOT of dust.
The lifter/tappet noise from my old engine.

I'm gonna go with.
Turning circle,
fwd. Wish it was awd..
and ..the cruise control worked without a clutch button on a manual..hahaha
But i love my car!!!!

1. Massive turning circle
2. Fuel consumption
3. Bit of lifter noise
4. You can always have more power

Ticking lash adjusters, old paintwork and the fact it seems to be a dirt magnet. Apart from that she's rock solid. No speed demon but a mighty fine cruiser. :D

I did notice the turning circle, and Mum has commented as well - we have decided it thinks its a cruise ship lol And dont blame it on being FWD - have had plenty of FWD that will turn on a pin...
I will add short travel front suspension - that caught me out on speed humps!
Stodgy handling and numb steering. There is no excuse i can see for not setting a car up to handle predictably and easily for for the masses, and still have it as a communicative and entertaining drive for the rest of us. As in most euro cars and even a 380.
But its a good cruiser - its not a sports car and should not be treated as such. What it was designed for it does quite well i think.

The engine stutter that no one can seem to work out,
I'll go with the pack on turning circle.
Other than that I'm pretty damn smitten.

Yeah I'm trying my best on that one there :bowrofl:
Errrrr i'll start with
Turning circle - 5 point turn ftw
Transmission - Sucks anus
ugly auto gear knob is horrible
Doors are not frameless
No sports Variant! (we all know what 3rd gens got but even 1st gens got bodykits!)
Besides that everything else i try and improve on. i think for the time it came out it was way ahead of the falcon and crapadore (just made that up then, not bad) in terms of styling and features...cant complain for an early 90's car really
FWD is ghey too

Yeah i know what you mean. But at the time until the EF?? Falcon came out i didn't see cupholders in any early 90's car.
super cheap fixed me up for that though...

What you dislike about your 2nd gen... ?
The fact it's not mine anymore and my son now has a better audio system than me!
Seriously, I started the wagon up on the weekend while I was RainXing the windscreen on our other cars. My younger son switched the radio on & turned it up. Forgot how loud and nice the old girl sounded.

ah well a few things.
Most mods have to be custom and many $$$$
again, turning circle, the stock front suspension.
Mitsubishi-its not such a popular name these days, even though the cars are good.
what i do like is: its different to the commonhores and falcoons, still got guts against many other cars while its completely stock. I can tinker around under the bonnet with out screwing things up too much. cheap to fix :D
and shaggin waggon ftw :D

Dislikes?
Tired auto box
No cupholders - any retrofit ideas anyone?
Crap dash speakers, crap original audio system. (Replaced)
V6 that wants to (needs to) rev but the gearbox won't let it!
Rear plugs that need to be done by feel/mirror/tools I don't have (yet)
Peeling paint - dark green metallic now replaced with white (Scotia white) solid colour.
The 4 months I spend doing the paint job ( = part time hobby)
My other TS that will need the same paint treatment. (Ho Hum - boring!)

add the following:
TPS that goes out of adjustment and gives rough idle/gearchanges
ISC motors that die.
Chain rattle.
GOOD THINGS: At least its not a falcodore.
Stable:
TP 2.6 manual wagon
TS 2.6 manual sedan
TS 3.0 auto wagon
2004 Lancer manual sean

Not overly fond of the auto gearbox (TR 2.6 Elite) - the dreaded engine vibration when idling in gear and the relatively poor fuel consumption (13-14 litres per 100kms)
But most of all, I hate every d...head in carparks using it as a target. In the past month I've copped a towbar in the rear bumper, a big tyre scrape (4WD?) across the front bumper/guard/parking light, then a tray top caved my drivers side rear door in. At least I caught him! And me about to claybar it! Ha! Might as well call it crash & carry.
But all in all a good little car, great daily driver and comparatively easy to work on.

The fact that even with 235s i still struggle for traction :D - i want lsd damnit!!!

well, personally along the lines of everyone else id rate the biggest problems as:
1. mysterious auto shudder
2. Paintwork
3. Turning circle
4. lack of clock on lower models.
5. lack of drink holders.

Had mine for nearly 10 years now, very few dislikes, turning circle is a bit much, but for a 4 cyl family saloon it's a good car.
The Astron motor is a good torquey 2.6 motor, old, but still good all the same, reliable and runs forever.
The interior could be nicer, my dash is blue and with the stock black plastic it looked a bit drab, so sprayed the black plastic silver, a lot nicer.
All in all, a great car, mine will stay in the family and be passed on to my daughter when she gets her license and it's also a "safe" car in an accident by all accounts.

You got the one good Astron of the whole batch then! :bowrofl:
Umm what can I say...horsepowers, the lack of smoothness in the shifting of the auto box (those who've driven auto 3rd gens too would know what I mean, it's abrupt), cup holders....thats about it really, she's a pretty good car for her age.

I think there was a limited production run of "Good Astrons" in the early 90's. lol
Mine has no chain rattle, a ****load of torque, good fuel economy, outright refuses to die no matter what... but general public opinion leads me to believe you're lucky to get one like that, they don't seem all that common. Fair few i've worked on have just been plain awful.

dislikes: **** engine, **** gearbox. Rough idle, louder than a 50y/o mack truck, mods cost a fortune, guzzles fuel, rattles everywhere inside the car, dead steering/ turning circle, not as big as it feels=interior space not as much as falcon/commodore of same era.
Likes: looks diferent if you've got the dosh to make it happen. superior panel rattle protection (boot/door/roof rattle as compared to falcon/commodore of same era)
It's served me well, but it's time to let it go.
P.S- My engines coming out for the third time in two years because of the stupid timing chain rattle that seems to be uncurable...

- Styling a bit weak
- What's with the grey plastic??? I mean seriously.
- Dust Dust and more Dust!
(can i just as an aside but, one of the most practical, expect no cup holders, and sizable dashes around, it's just easy and friendly and well less is more no?)

Sorry hitman, that was supposed to have a ":stoopid:" sign under it. I must've deleted it when I tried to fix the stupid quote thing...The front a rear ends of the 2nd gen (diamante included) are very uninspiring. Look at what other manufactorers had on offer at the time. Honda had the accord and legend, Mazda had its Eunos brand and Lexus had the ES300.
NOTE- if you look carefully at the mid-sections of the diamante and ES300, they're identical. Find a big pic of a diamante and put your hands over just behind the front wheel arch and the front of the rear wheel arch. Shape of doors/roof are almost exactly the same...so why is the lexus so much hotter?

Timing chain is as important as petrol, so i guess you dont need it.:doubt:
-lynel-
24-04-2008, 05:37 PM
dont know the astrons at all but maybe he means that the chain guide has been removed.
Its a common thing to take them out on sr20's (which im quite informed about) as the chain streches it contacts the chain guide, but the funny thing is it would take a broken chain for the chain to miss as the guide is between the cam sprokets, which is roughly 5-6inches. Even after 200,000kms there isnt enough play to get the chain off, but there is enough play to touch the guide and cause the rattle, as under power when the chain is taught, there is maybe 1-1.5mm of gap.
Something to consider maybe.

ha, while im at, another thing i dislike about my car is the rancid smell coming from the engine lately.
On the positive, i love the build quality of my car, compared to falcons and commodores of the same age, the interior is so much more solid and much more better held together, all panels are tight, no squeaks really, and its all so much nicer looker and longer lasting.

Most people say they have "timing chain" rattle when actually it is the counter balance shaft chain that rattles, mine has been removed along with the 2 counter balance shafts

well thats the best way isnt it. The engines ive worked on have never had balance shafts, but i understand the principle.
SR's suffer timing chain rattle but dont have balance shafts, they use hydraulic tensioners but these rarely fail on these engines, hence removing the chain guide, which probably came about as its a lot easier to access then the rest of the assembly.
