Quiet when cold, but rattles when warm.

Anyone else have a v6 TS and noticed noises from the steering pump, or is mine totally kaktus?

PS If you too want this noise, take an empty 500gm coffee tin, add a large ball bearing, add a bit of power steering fluid, put the lid on and SHAKE while the car is idling. BINGO!

how old is the Oil

the bearing is usually the thing to go
if air is entering the system that can cause the noise or if you have it on full lock

options
buy a second hand one from the wrecker if you can find one with lower KM

It has been bled and there is no air in the system.

The oil would be quite old - I will change it and see.

The noise is at idle with wheels straight ahead, there is no increase in noise when the wheel is turned, other than an increase in idle speed. It seems temperature related, not load related.

Someone in queensland is dismantling a silver 96 v6 wagon and selling parts on eBay. I've emailed him about his asking price. Failing that, a trip to the wreckers.

well if the noise is a constant that is a pump problem

Well, I finally bit the bullet and ripped the pump out.
Not an easy job - not much clearance to reach various parts.
Dismantled the pump and found - NOTHING - all good working order.(But need new belts)
Much head scratching - put it back together, using the proper Mitsu power steering fluid, less tension on the belts, bleed system. 7 Km drive - no noise! :bowrofl:

Will it return?
Changes made - less tension on belts (but are not slipping, so they are tight enough)
Correct fluid in the system, bled.

Any money on the cause or chance of the rattle returning? :doubt:

Write a black mail note so that the little midget with a hammer doesnt come back and live in the engine bay.

Damn midgets!
The noise is back, but quieter.
Stethoscope - big screwdriver - tells me its the bearing (bush)
The midget and I will be visiting You-Pull-it-and-get-your-hands-dirty soon.
