View Full Version : Brake grinding noise...

Last Thursday at Uni I noticed at low speeds the brakes were making a grinding noise (from the front brakes) upon their application. I immediately rang the mechanic and on Saturday he put in 2 new front brake pads and machined the front rotors as he said the pads were so worn that calipers were touching the rotor directly eg. metal on metal.
After I got the car back the noise still persisted, albeit less. Today (3 days after new pads/machining) I took it back to him to see if this was normal. He drove the car around the block with me and could hear the brake noise (only occurring noticeably at <20 km/h) but told me they have to "wear in" to the new pads and if I look at the brake discs they would look like a vinyl record with all these circular grooves on them and it is this that is making the noise. He said it should be gone within two weeks.
My question is...is he full of crap as I suspect or is this normal when new pads/machining occurs? He also said to try not to brake hard...?

Sounds right.New brake pads need a little time to bed in. I wouldn't think it would be 2 weeks though,

give it another week and if it persists tell him u want it fixed for free...they will make noises as they wear in, really depends how much and hard u apply them on the wear in time...but give it a week and go back :P

yeah give it another week, sometimes it can takes up to 1000km to wear in a set of pads properly.

did you or the mechanic bed the pads in? there is a bedding in procedure on every box of brak pads and this should be carried out when a new set are installed. Also, your pads will wear to suit the contour of the disk surface, so unless your discs are warped or really badly worn, i wouldnt worry about the grooves too much.

Na the mechanic didn't bed them in but I tried to.. a website said to go 50km/h then brake firm (not to the floor though), drive for 300m and do it again, 10 times. I did it about 4 times after I got it and just been driving normally since then.

If the pads were changed and the discs were not the mechanic should have champfered (filed) down the edges. Thats more than likely what is causing the grinding noise.
The brakes would not work properly if they had not been bedded in properly. Might also be worth checking if something is fouling against the disc itself (e.g. stone etc)

i know the noise you are talking about, and the only sollution i foudn was changing to a better set of pads
Ive always used Bendix pads, but i brought new discs and they came with free-bees...and i figured out why they were free... the noise defintely reduced but never went away with just a grindy noise at less then 20kms/hr. At speed there were no noises or vibrations.
I changed back to a new set of Bendix Ultimate pads and 20 minute bedding in and perfect as usual. No noises or vibrations. I got 50thousand out of my last set of pads before i started to get that low speed grinding.

read 3rd post..slow net connection = hitting button twice too often trying to enter message.
sorrrrrrrry
Has everyone else not read the part where he said the brake disks were machined?
If they were machined then there would NOT be any grooves on it at all. It should be as smooth as a baby's bum.
I'd be taking it back to the mechanic and asking him to explain why there are grooves in the disks that he apparently machined.
