View Full Version : How can it be?

I have been able to puzzle the local auto shop.
I was able to compare the height of my car which i know is on King Lows and a standard TL VRX AWD. Visually mine looks lower and measured from lowest points on sideskirts it is lower by between 30-40mm.
HOWEVER when measured from centre of wheel hub to wheelarch there was only 5mm difference.
Wheel size is 235/40/18, but that shouldn't have any bearing on the actual distance from wheel centre to wheel arch height. OR WOULD IT????
Why is it so?????????

im guessing yours was 5mm lower?
it'll be cause you have a smaller rolling diameter then stock
well thats the only reason i can think of
A lower profile tyre will make the whole car lower, but the wheels have no effect on the clearance between arch and hub.

nope, the wheel has lower rubber as being lower profile but the rim is larger hence the same rolling diameter.

Uneven ground
It did become a considerationlol lol lol
Is it 55 or 50 profile standard on AWD. If it's 55 profile on a 16 then plus 2 system would make it 45 on an 18. So half that for each side of tyre diameter i have at 40 profile.
Na too hard. I'll see if any boffins have an idea
Mitsubishi finally realized that gap between tyre and wheel arch is on a big side so they decided to redesign fender on the other Vrx :D

AWDs have 60 profile tyres on the 16" wheels.
OD of AWD 215/60R16 is 664mm.
OD of your 235/40R18 is 645mm.
That is a difference of 19mm which means your hub will sit 9.5mm lower that the AWD.
When were your springs done. It does take time for it to reach its final height.
BTW. Your tyres are way under sized for an AWD. If your car indicates 60km/hr you are
actually doing 58.3km/hr. Also that tyre will not have sufficient load rating for your car
as well.
vlad please explain how the tyre profile changes the distance between the hub and the arch?

Not following that one at all

Read what I said. I was just stating that the different sized tyres affect the distance b/w
the centre and the ground.
bushman, the attached image is what you should be getting.
Edit: bushman, you should really be fitting 235/45R18 tyres to your car. These give
an OD of 669mm which is only 5mm bigger than OEM. You will find that the 235/40R18
tyres are illegal for your car which I pressume requires a minimum load rating of 95.
Also 2.8% OD change is verging on the illegal side as well.

Would they actually fit? This has been asked before here, (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57748&highlight=tyre+size) and would suggest there may not be quite enough room for a wheel/ tyre combo with a larger OD.
BTW: There's very few choices in tyres this size.. with the correct load rating.

which also means they arnt legal!!!
First off, Alscall, the OD is only 5mm bigger, use wheelmaster to have a look see. Bushman
already has the 235's so I presume his wheels have to correct offset so that the tyres
dont stick out beyond the guards (illegal). the profile just changes the sidewall height to
make it the same overall diameter as the original tyre/wheel combo. The wheel's offset
should be 35 and no more than 38. On mine, 225 wide with 40 offset, its just within the
guards.
Secondly, MRMGNA, 19mm difference is illegal, as a result Bushman's tyres also do not
have the required minimum load rating for his car. See the following from the ADR:
The overall diameter of a wheel and tyre fitted to a vehicle manufactured on or after 1
January 1973 (ADR 24) must not be more than 15 mm greater than the largest tyre size
listed on the tyre placard and not more than 15 mm less than the smallest tyre size listed
on the placard. Specifications for overall tyre diameters are listed in the Tyre and Rim
Standards Manual, issued by the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia.

Thanks for the insight vlad.
Have just checked the tyres are 235/40ZR 18 95W. I would have thought that the original tyre being a 45 profile but with the same rating would still make it legal.
Anybody in Vic know of a place to stock 45 ratings under $200.
So that takes case of the tyres but
Thanks for the chatter to all.:) :) :)

Cheapest tyre I've found so far in 235/45/18 with an XL rating is a Kumho, costs around $260. There is a Goodyear tyre also - Goodyear Eagle NCT5 235/45R18 but its only got a 94 load rating. Don't know how much it costs though.

Have gotten info of my car from release and it came with 235/40 ZR18 95W
Went and had the car checked for speedo accuracy after reading some posts, because the last thing i won't is the car defected.
When i picked the car up they informed me the car was 2km/h out 98 when showing 100
Now
Thanks for the insight vlad.

Thats ok. However as I said, yours is still illegal on the size side of things being more than
15 mm smaller in diameter than OEM.
