View Full Version : Problems with sticking throttle on a 2.6 auto

A new problem has started as of late last week. It seems after racing the engine a bit, the throttle seems to get stuck at a rather high speed, approx 1700-2000rpm in neutral.

Thus, driving is bearable, feels like I have cruise control! But its dangerous, slowing/stopping is very hard, and my torque convertor is working too hard when i've stopped. THe only way I've been able to fix this is to turn off the engine and then turn it back on. This seems to fix the problem, and as long as I don't race it, its drivable.

I highly doubt its the ISC, because the engine speed is affected even while driving.

I'm thinking it could be a dirty or blocked vacuum lines in the throttle body. Can anyone enlighten this for me?

I'm going to try and clean it this weekend and see if it fixes the problem.

please, please find the problem!!!i have had this proble for about a year, totally random in occourance, my mechanic thinks it could be either the idle control motor (around $400) or the air flow meter again around $400)
so of you find a blocked hose, please let me know which one so i can fix mine as well!! p.s. do you get a "lumpy" idle as well with yours??

An update, the problem is much worse, the car is now undrivable.

The engine now idles at 1700 ~ 1800rpm as soon as I start the engine. I can't just turn the car off and back on again, that won't work.

And since I've got an auto, theres no way in putting it into gear without damaging the gearbox.

Well at least I have a whole day to look at it now, bah.

Right, another update.

The problem is either the Fast Idle Air Valve or the Idle Speed Control Motor.

At the moment I am 90% sure its the ISC motor, and added to that, one of the coils in the motor seems to have some sort of an open circuit, so I am in the process of getting a new one and will get back this afternoon on the outcome.

WGNBOY: Try and block the bypass air passages in the throttle body to see if its the ISC motor/Fast Idle Air Control is the problem. Just undo the intake pipe from the throttle body, use an electrical tape to cover the two holes in front of the butterfly (flap). Just make sure that you've got the electrical tape sticking out slightly out of the intake and then its nudged in between the piping and the end of the hole. That way the electrical tape will not fly straight into the intake system if for some reason it peels off.

w00t its fixed!

I sourced a new ISC motor for $200 which is $70 cheaper then MMAL Spares, and its also genuine :)

I got it from http://www.nardek.com.au/isc.htm. I recommend anyone needing an ISC motor to get it from here.

Samurai: I did try that, but I think the ISC Solenoid is stuck in an open position, so even if I just unplug it, air was still passing through. I could have sealed the passages and save $200, but in the long run, especially with winter coming soon, it won't work too well because of the cold weather, which means really cold starts, meaning I need to hold the throttle for the the car to idle properly.

And if I add other loads like A/C, I would also need to hold the throttle so it idle's properly.
