Hey Guys,

WOW!!

I remember reading that these 380 things really loosen up at around 30k....

I kinda didn't really believe it, but I can vouch for whoever mentioned they do!!!

Its revs better, pulls like a train down low and the fuel economy has improved (got it down to 7.9 on a trip from Ballarat to Geelong)

So if your 380 isn't at 30k yet, LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN IT DOES!!

yep, they unlock a hidden chip when they do the 30,000km service yo!

nah, i never really thought much of cars 'loosening up' after XX,XXXkms.. but when mum first got her new CJ Lancer with the CVT in it, it sounded like an electric whipper snipper, had no go in it and fuel consumption was no where near the 8.5l/100kms it said on the sticker..

after 9,000kms it pulls a lot harder, doesnt sound anywhere near as tinny as it first did and fuel economy has dropped down from 12l/100kms to low 9's around town..

I am a firm believer of bedding in an engine over a long period of time. I had a Focus ST170 back in the UK. When I first got it, it was tighter than a ducks ****, after about 15,000 miles, the thing just really started to loosen up and rev much more freely.

I had a similar experiance at my 30 000km service I was so impressed with the difference............. However i just had my 45 000km service and the same cant be said the fuel economy seems worse than ever! Drove from canberra to adelaide stuck to 100km/h and didnt average better than about 10.4 dang that! Now in adealaide can better 12.8 which is the worst since purchasing!

22,000 k's - 8 more to go! Got the surprise of my life when I decided to do a check on my oil using the dip stick and was BLACK as. Booked it in and they told me it'll be due for the 22,500 Km service anyway which includes an oil change.

From a previous thread I put in - fuel economy since the new filter and intake mod got a lot worse immediately after (16's). In two weeks time I reset the computer and managed to get my economy lower than before the mod (14.3). It however loves to rev such that I find it difficult not to drive it hard. I now sit in the 15 l/100 mark. I reckon it's a good compromise - until the next mod comes up.

Yeah I also found that although power increase & responsiveness got a whole lot better, the good economy was lost. As you said, it revs better so you enjoy pushing it harder.
The economy doesn't bother me too much (...if it did, I would have reversed my mods), but one thing I have noticed is that (for auto 380s that is) if you drive in auto mode, economy is much better than manual mode - though the driving experience itself is not as good... but there's those compromises again.

This may not be such a bad thing.

New oils have detergents in them, these, when heated, turn black.

If the oil smells burnt, or is thick when you drain it, then its an issue.
