Hey all. I am making a guage pod for my te to go in the centre console. I am only going to run 2 guages. In 5th gear, i have a clean line to the left hand ga=uage.
So far, all i have done is glue the bits of ag pipe that the guages slot into perfectly into the console, stretch a section of my girlfriends old tights around it, and laid my first coat of resin on the tights. What do you lot think?
if they are successful and there is demand, i may consider making them for members.

Nice one! I would be interested in one of these. Do they hold 52mm or 60mm gauges?

they fit the 52mm diameter guages, but i could probably make one for a 60mm guage.
just laid 1 layer of random mat over it, cut the holes for the guages, and glassed them up. Next step i will trim it up, rub it back and bog it up a bit and give it a good sand, but that will be next week. Stay tuned. :D

I was thinkin gloss black, or a gunmetal grey. Originally my dash wash the same colour as my car, which is the metallic burgundy that you can see in the pics, but have since got charcoal suede so something like that.
I gave it a good sand with the drill and flap disc this arvy, i'm still itchy from the dust.
I sat it in the car so knew how it would look, and here is the result.

doesnt look too bad
only bad thing is you lose your cup holders
i was thinking about making some guage holders, but was going to have them above the clock like the FTO's have

that is a possibility, but atm, my glassing skillz dont go that far. This so far has been a piece of cake. When i finish this one, i might have a look at doing one for the ashtray section for those that would like to retain the cup holders. I didnt have a problem losing my cup holders as i dont drink in my car(or smoke) :D . I only had the small coin try there anyway.
small rethink, i could do one that keeps the ciggie lighter, for 12v power, but the guages are where the ashtray was. How does that sound?

sounds great, its exactly what i was thinking and put a oil temp/pressure in there using a speco filter wedge, will allow me/others to see what the motor is doing.

Mate! That looks sweet as!
For me - I still like a bit of showman bling (so would rather it on the dash (see-able)) Like on the Holden Monaro's - but I still like it!
Well done - will look forward to seeing the finished product.

Dont get to far ahead of yourself!!!
Wait till the sanding comes into play mate, you wont be saying its easy then.
Many applications of bog will have to be done, then sanding, then bog, sanding, primer, sanding, etc!
Also i recommend you get a can of spray putty, it fills in all the little dimples you'll be left with when you think its perfectly smooth. then when you paint it it will look awesome :D
Thats a good idea mate, and I'm sure it'll come out excellent. One question though, why is this in car audio?
Will the shifter get in the way in any gear?

That'd be an awesome spot! I've told myself that there's where I'd put gauges if I had any - but alas I haven't got the skills to make up something :(
I don't drink in my car much, but I wouldn't be keen on losing my cup holders.

Had a bit of a re-think today and I'm going to re-do it. I am going to put a bit of space in between the two pods so that it makes forming and shaping that section a bit easier, also, i will modify how it attaches to the centre console so that it is removable.
Thanks for the support doods.

I was looking at that and was thinking to myself that it would be quite hard to glass since they are both close together, let us know how ya go

As has been said, Fibreglassing is very, very easy indeed. Once everything is measured, and set out, the glass and resin a child could do. The problem lies with the adding of bog, then sanding, then adding bog, then sanding. Took me a week to get my A pillars done, and even still then, they could of done with some more sanding.
I am going to be doing a similar thing soon, and I will also be adding a guage or two into my drivers side sail pannel, (cant use A pillars as thats where my tweeters are stored)

Its good fun too :)
Another way around imperfect sanding/fibreglass is to cover stuff in vinyl - it ends up looking pretty darned nice if you stretch and stick it correctly.

Thats always a good idea aswell :)
Does anyone know much info about vacuuming fiberglass. Apparantely its needed to give your finish a lasting appearance, other wise little water droplets still withing the fiberglass come out and start to crack your finial product.

thats where i have my 3, but to get a decent angle on them so u can read them u basically lose the cup holders anyway.

Won't your drinks spill on such an odd angle? or do you do lots of downhill driving?
Looks good nevertheless
In relation to vacuuming, just make sure you use a proper FG roller and mix up your resin in the right quantities.

Dosnt it still need to be done however. As far as i know alot of the top car audio installers still send things away to be vacuumed.
