SOHC FTW?
Guess that proves that with time and money you can even make a SOHC engine ballistic
I'll stick to my 3.5 though

You've never seen a top mount intercooler before?

Always wondered just how effective thay are however. I know the WRXs run one but they however have a bonnet scoop to let the cold air in.

That intercooler would have to be really ineffective there though. There isnt even any scoop or vents or anything. Would get heat soaked in no time.

One of the things they did was ditch the top mount & fit a larger front mount. So I guess front is better?
Nice 2nd gen wagon tho.
Hey TuffTR (I think it was you & I who were discussing it in the 'other' thread), did we ever come to a conclusion if the motor had been shifted over a bit or was it just an illusion?

I know one advantage of having a top mount is that the plumbing for the intercooler is much shorter, and helps reduce turbo lag and response. I guess maybe some manufacturers might prefer a hidden intercooler also?
But even with a bonnet scoop, when its sitting on top of a hot engine in a hot engine bay, and the fact that usually the top mount intercooleres are quite small, the are benefits of moving to a frount mount, especially if boost is being wound up a bit.

no, i've seen top mount 'coolers before, i'm just saying positioned on the right side, vertically than horizontal and next to the engine than right above the engine- it's pretty different

there is a scoop, its hard to see in the photos, but there is one

correct
for the ulehs out there the longer and more corners u have in ur piping the better the "dose bro" lol
alot of modded cars in japan have bonnet mounted coolers, christian pickerings s14.5 (i think) had a top mount. and well obviously that was a very succesful car

top mount intercoolers are all about 2 things...an intercooler is better then no intercooler, and just like front wheel drive, the more you stack on or under an engine, the more that can be put in at once.
engines are completely assembled, piping and all, then raised up under the car and secured by the subframe. Its a cost saving measure
Pickerings car would not have had a traditional top mount, it would have been a V mount, which kinda of creates a > shape with the radiator on the bottom and intercooler on top. SR20's in S series cars give a lot of room to have this sit behind the reo-bar, and in racing terms gives good air flow to intercooler and radiator, as its the radiator keeping the engine alive and its the radiaotr usually missing out on air flow when blocked by a large front mount.
Search Nissansilvia.com for picks, its almost the have to have thing in D1.

Was about to post the same thing, top mount is on top of the engine whereas V mount is IN FRONT of the engine. V mount is more efficient because it gives equal flow to the radiator and intercooler rather than traditionally a big f-off front-mount giving great cooling ability but being pretty useless when the car overheats from no air flow on the radiator after 5 minutes.
Having a look at the pic, he may have a naca duct on the right hand side, it's hard to see but I think that cooler would be pretty useless, it's side mount, sure, keep the piping short and not bust up the factory look so no-one would know. I was also thinking he could make sound ground effects and duct up some piping but that'd get awfully messy and the gearbox takes up a lot of room.
