I am having a problem with my recently purchased 2.6L TR Magna. Every couple of weeks the car dies while driving along and then will not restart for 10 to 15 minutes. The car will turn over on the starter but does not fire.

At the suggestion of the guy at the car yard where I purchased the car, I am able to get around the problem and get the car started by
1. Turning the Ignition key on
2. Unplugging and re-plugging the main electrical wire from the coil and distributor

After the above procedure the car will run fine for another couple of weeks and then die again.

As anyone come across this problem before?

well definately somethinig in the ignition. Sorta hard to tell without closer inspection or testing. but sounds like either the distibutor and/or its cap, rotor arm, TDC sensor or even the power transistor.

i had that problem with my 93 TR however found it was something to do with the wiring around the fan causing the engine to overheat. also found it would shut off after turning on the AC for some reason. had the fans hard wired permanently when the car is on n dont have the problem any more. but will check up exactly what we had done n let ya know.

best of luck.

Im going to step out on a limb here and say : Im 95% sure i know the answer.

what you will find the problem is is your coil transistor , its the little black thingie attached to your coil - they are 110 dollars to replace.

what you have just described is almost to the letter what happened to my car only a week ago - suffice to say that was the problem.

changed the transistor = smooth sailing.. good luck mate :)

*please dont abuse me if its not the prob - but from what you ve explained - exactly the same as mine*

i was thinking it sounded like that problem.

hows it going anyway TR-IFFIC? fixed the problem?

and Muzhod if you think that is the problem then there is a way to test it which i described in TR-IFFIC's post about his problem.

i have to say tho i didnt think the power transistor's were that big a problem. Anyone know how long they supposed to last?

Yup - problems all fixed now

from what i was told the coil itself very rarely gives up - it mostly the transistor . It is actually attached to the coil with a heatspreader and it has like a thermal paste (similair to pc CPU's) that must be used. after a few years it can deteriorate hence some problems can occur. so yeah, the problem has gone for the time being..

can hardly wait for the next problem

yeh im of the theory that as soon as something is fixed something else breaks. Solution is simply dont fix the first problem.

The ignition om mine dies a few weeks ago, tested everything couldnt find the problem, ended up taking it to an auto electrician, turned out to be the coil, Dam thing tested fine though with a multimeter!

I took the car to the local Mitsubishi dealer who check it all out (ECU, Coil and Distributor all OK). They only found a problem with one of the connectors to the distributor. The connector was a bit loose and corroded and according to them may have been working loose over time and then failing when the engine was hot. The connection was fixed so I will have to wait and see what happens.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
