opilot87, post a pic when you get it back?
Here we are people, pic of it installed in my car. Its on a 2nd gen with cruise control, and to my suprise, the wiring was identical, so it was a case of unplug and plug for the wiring, easy as :)
Enjoy, was getting dark when I took them, so first pic is with flash so you can see detail, but the colours/look are more realistic on the 2nd pic without flash. Oh and last one is one of my car as i had just washed it lol

I'm not sure if it's the flash but it looks like the re-coloured bits still have a tinge of red showing..
How much did it set you back, $75 was it?

awesome, how much did this cost? can most auto trimmers do this?
i plan to do this to my wheel when i get it, can they do it in all sorts of colours?
Awesome mate, what'd that set you back? Its exactly what I'm going to do with mine when I eventually get my hands on it :P Haven't looked into pricing much yet though.

I'm pretty much sure the shoe repair shop can re-dye it for cheaper price.
Nice work. BTW, anyone know what the difference is between the MOMO Ralliart steering
wheel and that on mine? Visually, mine is missing the MOMO badge. See my sig for an image

It cost me $75, and it was re-dyed, not re-trimmed. Re-trimming would have been a lot more expensive. I am not sure if they re-coloured the whole wheel or just the red bits, I think they mainly did the red bits and then blended it in by putting a light coat all over.
So it will probably cost the same or nearly the same if you want to change the colour of the whole wheel, and yeh they just use soem dye so I am sure they can do absolutely any colour you wish for.
vlad your wheel seems exactly the same except for the perforated momo section at the bottom which is curous. Dunno why they didnt just use the same wheel, maybe they would have had to pay royalty to momo or something.
I cant really see red, but I just looked at the wheel again, and if you go up real close and look down the deep stiching/join parts, you can just see traces of a little bit of red, which they couldnt get down to with the dye or whatever, but I dont think you would ever notice it unless you were looking for it.
Pretty happy with it, still got my cruise control and feels much much nicer to drive with. Feels like your holding a car now, and when you drive out of an intersection I love the soft smooth leather sliding through your hands.

The KS had the stalk like the 3rd gens. However, the main switch is located next to the
dimmer dial. The 3rd gens have the main switch on the stalk.

Spot on, TE/TF/KE/KF had the button where the TCL switch is now on the newer models. TH/KH onward had the button on the end of the cruise stalk.

Yeah i have the main switch there too, but i have the buttons on the wheel, the wiring should be the same for when i get my new wheel yeah?
I would be pretty sure it does. When I was at the wreckers there was another wheel that had a new nicer stalk, and also had a push button on the side to turn cruise on/off. I thought this might be good coz I hate having to turn it on all the time using that button the dash. I ended up taking the one I have now coz it was a non-airbag wheel, and the horn pad cover is different, long story but I think the new system can be used "(though not sure if the extra on button would actually work) but it was simpler to take this whole wheel then have to mix and match.
I was just thinking that there are probably going to be quite a few people putting these wheels in that have never changed a steering wheel before so a couple of quick tips.
1. Be careful that you wont fall/move and wack your face on the steering wheel when undoing the big main nut. At first I was trying to hold the wheel with one hand and pull the ratchet lever the opposite way to un do it, but after a bit of effort I tried to simply clamp the steering wheel spoke and the ratchet lever together with one hand, and suprisingly came loose with little effort.
2. Once you loosen the main nut, loosen it a fair bit but leave it on. Then jerk the wheel back and forth and side to side until it comes loose. Once the wheel is loose take of the nut and wheel. Many a people have knocked themselves out as the steerign wheel is difficult to get unstuck, and when it finally does, goes flying in their face.
The first time I did this in my old car, I managed to give myself a blood nose. I actually used the 2nd trick, but when I was loosening the main nut I was putting in much effort and it suddenly came loose and as the ratchet handle just went limp I fell into the steering wheel and my nose hit smack bang on the rim
Also make you wheels dead straight when you take the wheel off, and try not to move it, so that when you put the new one on, you know to put the wheel heading dead centre and it will be in the correct alignment.

I'm pretty sure a monkey could swap these over if you have no airbag like me lol
It would have took me 10 minutes max if i didn't thread the 2nd screw that i went to take out caus it was tighter than a fish's ***hole! So i had to find another way in, which was very umm, interesting :P But i got it in the end!
But yer, tomorrow night ill take the horn pad back off and do up a quick DIY.
It was funny though caus I put it on, went for a drive, and realised it wasnt straight lol but it only took like 30 seconds to get it off and on again.

Did your car have an airbag?
Was just wondering if the Ralliart Steering wheel would fit a 2nd gen with airbag.
It was re-dyed, I asked how exactly but to be honest I dont really remember what they told me, apart from 'exactly how its done at the tannery'. I think they try take off the original colour and then use leather dye stuff to colour it the colour you want. A lot cheaper than re-trimming the steering wheel. (cost me $75) So thats why it still has the MOMO emblem, leather is still exactly the same.
My car did not have an airbag before. I dont think this wheel would fit a 2nd gen with an airbag. Well the wheel would fit, however im pretty sure the original airbag will not fit inside as its different to the 3rd gen inside airbag and parts. I dont think it would be wise to use a 3rd gen airbag either, as it wasnt designed for the car. You could just not use the airbag but then you lose the safety and it is illegal.

im definitely going with the redye over the retrim. looks good btw.
would love a right up with some pics for those with airbags. could prob do it myself. but i would prefer just to see a right up so i have a bit more of an idea of what im doing.
from what ive gathered.
1. undo battery. can just undo the -ve cant i?
2. undo some nuts/bolts.
3. unplug cruise and airbag.
4. err undo big nut most the way.
5. loosen steering wheel.
6. remove nut. remove steering wheel.
hmm. i havn't actually looked at my steering wheel. but it seems pretty easy.
just a bit unsure about the airbag.

  its really quite easy, all you need to do is find the right star shaped socket(tork screw?)and undo the two bolts that hold the airbag on,they dont come out all the way as they are held in by tabs, simply wriggle the bag off, undo all the connections and swap everything over..just remember for complete safety to remove the neg battery cable and wrap it in tape or a cloth to avoid accidental contact with the terminal..its an easy job and the wheel looks and feels great....mmmm...momo....lol

Hey Guys
Two questions...
Anyone got a pic of a red and black momo in a TJ VR-X... without redying the red bits I mean.?
Also couldn't you just pull the airbag system's fuse out??
Every time I disconnect the battery i have to get the transmission reset at mitso using the MUT-II cos' it flares from 2nd to 3rd.... I'm getting over doing that....
Looks the goods though!!!

Why go to all the trouble of trying to find the fuse when you can just yank the -ve wire on the battery? Seems easier for me. Strange problem you're having with the tranny though.

Well from what the guys at mitso said it's common for the 5 speed tiptronics...
They turn off the invecs and test the tranny in pure mechanical mode to see if there's a defect. if all checks out ok during the test they just connect up the MUT and do something and she's all sweet again...
Do ya think a fuse would be enough... I've never played around with the SRS system before...
hell I can do everything else but having an explosive device going off in the face isn't my idea of fun.
Though... it'd be nice to have a few weeks off work.... and my nose smashed to the back of my head.... hmmmmm fun to be had right there!!!!

Thanks TJAWD,
I did that exact sequence.... I have the workshop manual on my laptop...(and all the guides written here on AMC.
I sat there for pretty much one whole afternoon doing this...
At gentle throttle it worked a treat... when I went for an overtaking move it flared...
Apparently it takes approx 40 key starts to fully relearn this thing.... easier and quicker just to get the mitso guys to do it in 10 minutes.... and it's perfect.
I just ordered my MOMO wheel too from a guy in the ACT....
Do you guys think this MOMO wheel would look good without re-dying the red inserts on the TJ VR-X with it's red dials???
Can't wait...
I'm gonna pull the SRS fuse instead.....

mmmm if its locked there you obviosly have the keys out,put them back in to unlock the steering lock and straighten up the wheel, give it a thump forward,ie hit it on both sides of the wheel at once with both hands and try getting both hands behind the wheel and hitting and pulling on it...shoundnt be that hard,,,,,

You really have to grab the top of the wheel and rock the bastard toward you, it has been on there an awful long time so it probably doesn't want to move, give it a hefty shake :)

got mine in, put it in today. And you gotta be friggin kidding me...
i spent hours out there (missing the gordon ramsey show and everything) trying to get the wheel off, i was whacking, trying to fabricate a puller (dont have one) and everything. I came here and saw someone (sorry forgot who) earlier in the thread who said that starting the car and the wheel came off. Sounded weird but it tried.
I started the car and grab the top of the wheel and yank it back an forth many times, moving the whole car, and then i turn the wheel left right, left right, and pop it just pops off. Damn it!
Now its on and im very happy. I dont have interesting photos, just the regular.

We dyed them ourselves, it actually soaks into the leather and looks quite good.
The only issue we had was that after it had sucked in about 5 coats and dried the surface had a very dry look to it, kinda chalky looking but no actual residue on it, we just massaged a little baby oil into it and the lustre returned. Apparently the baby oil is wonderful for reconditioning leather such as baseball mits/shoes etc.
Total cost - $0 (we had baby oil cos BJ31OS has a little dude, and MagnaTRDriver had the dye from previous mods and lives around the corner...)

i reckon it looks better matt but it will go shiny eventually from wear. nice work luke cause thats what the leather places do anyway. just dont go too thick with the dye casue it does crack if its too thick.

I figured as much, there was no way I was paying $75 to colour a $40 wheel. The way I saw it was if I completely ruin it then Ive only wasted $40.....And when I googled Baby Oil and Leather I got 4 billion results so I figured I must have guessed the right product to use on it...

That looks like a really good job, if I knew mine would turn out like that, I would have probably done it myself rather than proffessionally. Does it still FEEL like leather and the rest of the steering wheel? Was thinking if that spray on paint stuff is on too thick it might not feel like nice soft leather anymore?

Yep, after I used leather conditioner to remove the chalky residue, it feels the same. I must have done at least 10 coats maybe more on it so I am hoping it will last a long time and no sign of wear as yet. The only concern was an initial but barely noticable dye smell on my hands/fingers after an hour drive to/from work but that it gone now. Then again, if you use a lot of leather conditioner, that probably won't happen.

I'm not sure how an non airbag 3rd gen front cover is held on. If it's anything like my mum's Camry, the cover is pushed on and held by clips, then there is one screw in the bottom of the wheel. I don't know how you would go securely fitting it to the momo wheel though as it only ever came with an airbag. However, if you want a 3rd gen airbag front cover, the front cover is attached to the airbag itself, which is then secured from each side of the wheel with torx screws. So in order to have the front cover, my understanding is that you need the airbag which is no big deal. Then you would also need the rear cover housing, the 4 screws which secure it and hold the airbag torx screws, plus the horn pad assembly.

and where do i get the screwdriver bit? any1 want to sell me 1?
They're Torx bits. You can buy them from Bunnings. I found a pack of six or so bits as well as a driver for $7 (underneath the screwdrivers). You need to get a 'T30' size bit.
I don't have a guide, but it's really easy to do. Once you take the horn/airbag off (a torx screw either side of the wheel, and unplug a cord), you're greeted with this (pic attached). Basically you just undo everything, and put it back when you have the new wheel on.
I disconnected the battery (removed the negative terminal) to make sure the airbag didn't go off.
I have read here many times that you need a size 30 torx bit, i got one of them and it was too big, i ended up using a size 28.
See my attachments-
1) that's the fuse you remove to stop the airbag going off, if you dont want to remove the battery. Also (i didnt take a pic) but if you dont want the horn to keep going off, you will need to remove the fuse for that in the engine bay.
2) this is one of the screws you need to remove, it is on the right next to the cruise control, there is also one at the same spot, other side.
3) this is when the nuts have been undone and the airbag has been pulled out (will take a lilttle force, dont be afraid) that yellow wire in the middle connects to the airbag. If you remove this connection then you can take the airbag out and put it aside.
4) this is with the airbag removed and with those springs removed also (as seen in Red Valdez's pic)
Undo pretty much all the screws you can and undo the nut in the middle, but dont remove it completely for now. There are various ways of removing the wheel, some use a puller, some say you can yank it, i found that turning the wheel quickly left and right made the wheel loosen, then you can remove the centre nut, and pull the wheel off (provided you have removed the screws that connect it to the plastic cover that covers the rear side of the steering wheel)
As always, replacement is the reversal of the removal procedure.

Meph, I don't know about your car, but thats not the airbag fuse in mine. Mines the 2nd from the right in the bottom right corner. Probably best to read the fuse cover and pull the right one, not worth the risk of just presuming whats written here is correct.

Well i looked at the lid for the fuse cover and i pulled out the ones that looked like they could have been for the airbag (2nd and 3rd from bottom right). So i turn the car to "on" and the SRS light goes out.
Hmm... *gets out the manual* ok its the (one in the picture) so i pulled that out, turned car to "on" and the SRS light stays on.
Also the one you would think is the horn one (in the footwell) isnt for the horn, you need a strange one from the engine bay (again check the manual) its like the covers for the fuse boxes are wrong. Unless its because mine is one of the first TL's and they have the TJ covers which are different? i dont know.

I noticed that too, up close they don't quite look cheap and nasty up against the black dash, but still out of place. I'll be retrimming and repainting the dashboard to match up. Maybe i'll just have the wheel done. Need some photoshop concepts whipped up first. Kind of hard to tell, i'm not trying to make a "modern classy" but rather a retro classy, black all around with light splashes of subtle red thrown in.
I noticed on the second gens these stick out an extra inch or so due to the added length of the horn pad. The actual horn attachment also doesn't feel as sturdy as the factory standard second gen wheel. That said, can't complain. The results were nice and the wheel is much nicer to hold.

It depends on the car though. I initially had reservations about putting the red inside my VR-X (I was going to re-dye it silver to match the outside), but it turns out the red wheel is a pretty sweet match for the red dials.

But isnt the whole steering wheel from a 3rd gen??? If the horn pad seems to stick out, you can actually adjust it. I didnt get the screws that hold the horn pad in, so I had to use the one from my old wheel, except the 3rd gen needs two screws. So sometimes the left side sticks up a bit, need to find another screw for it.
But if you disconnect you horn, or you can just really piss off the neighbours, press the horn pad down and then screw in/tighten the screw that holds the horn pad in. I did this the first time, and it actually seemed to be holdign it down to much like the horn was going to go off permanentely so I loosened it a bit. Give this a try, might help.

Warning to all. This is an important step, and as obvious as it sounds, if you do not do this, you will damage the slip ring or clock spring assembly. Great DIY write up.

Just went and pulled out the fuse you claim is the Airbag one (well it is in your TL anyway) and it killed my indicators. not for the airbag circuit its a safety issue. but it takes a dealer 2 secs to reset it. unlike when it deploys in an accident u have to replace the computer that can't be reset.
well i dont know if the code is stored anywhere, because i pulled the fuse, turned the car to "on" to see if the light stayed on (it did)
when i was done, fuse back in, car to on, light went off... So as long as the bag goes boom, im happy.

I found the Septone Vinyl and Plastic paint went on but came off the moment you brushed it with a fingernail. Bit of a shame really. Up until the paint came off it looked quite good. The other thing was that the paint needed to be shaken for a while before use otherwise the stuff that would come out would just strip the old paint off the surface of where you were spraying.
I redid mine with Waproo Dye and Shine (rejuvenator dye) and shined it up with Kitten Leather Conditioner and Cleaner and it came up mint.
The dye and shine came in a 50ml bottle from the Mr Minit Kiosks in shopping centres.

eBay would be the main one. They were sold off in bulk lots from Greys Online for cheap, and eBay is obviously the easiest way to sell it off, especially for a niche like Magnas.
Forum member Anon did a group buy for AMC, but that was ages back, and was limited to 60 people. You could always place a WTB thread in the For Sale section in case anyone is selling theirs.

i bought some light grey VHT vinyl spray today for my wheel
just wondering for the people who masked there wheels when they did it how effective was it?
did it run or masked well?

Depends on the quality of the masking tape. The 3M stuff worked really well.

sweet man!
knew i should of got some while i was in town
too distracted by the hawthorn theme song
so the curves weren't that hard to mask properly?
did you use any of that vinyl prep stuff or straight on with the dye?

Personally I found the VHT leather and vinyl dye spray to be very poor, it pretty much came off as soon at it had set and I had cleaned the thing first with a proper leather cleaner.
The masking was easy enough, just mask in lots of straight lines and they'll do the job fine.

kept mine in the red and black - getting the gear knob and hand brake trimmed to match it.
Mitsubishi chadstone did the install at the last service at no cost!

Vynal Paint - Paint - will wear off after extended use
Vynal Dye - soaks into leather - will not wear out
I've used the paint on another high wear area, actually less wear then what a wheel would get and within a month or two it was bye bye
use a form of shoe dye to permanently change the color
wookie, nice

I wasnt referring to YOU, I was saying in general, some people are using a paint, if it works for them well they are lucky, cause paint will wear off.
Just saying, use a dye, not a paint..

Well i tried VHT Light Grey Satin and it had a blue tinge and was too light
I spent 2 weeks waiting for VHT Dove Grey and I found out today its not longer made
So today I'm Trying VHT Silver Vinyl Dye its close to the colour of my grey leather however it has a metallic look to it
so now i dont know what to do
I think i will just paint it black afterall

got some grey waproo colour change stuff
put one coat on and its taken the silver colour away
i think after a couple more coats over the next few days it will just about be a perfect match
should have just used the waproo stuff to start with

Well, after 3 layers of separate dyes the dye was no longer working
so i decided to strip it back and it didnte work properly do i dyed over my half done striping and it looks like crap!
should have painted it black in the first place considering my seats are going to go black soon
so now im without a wheel! and im extremly p***** at myself!

I just gave mine to a professional leather repairer. He stripped it completely and re-did it all black. It cost me $100 to get it done and its guaranteed not to rub off. He re-colours complete leather lounge suites for Domayne so I have not worries about the quality of his work.

I used BM Leather Creations in Richmond to get mine dyed all black. Cost $150 cash, with haggling!
No pics but you'd never know this wheel wasn't always black. :D

The guy who did it has a business in Wollongong. I think its a franchise but his work is awesome.
the website is www.newliferepairs.com.au
I'll post up a photo of mine tomorrow.

Does look a bit red. Checked it today and you definatly cant see red at all. Maybe cause when I took the photo it was pitch black and a very bright flash.

Flash does funny things to photos of interior parts. If you can't see it in real life I wouldn't stress.

Best looking dye of a Ralliart wheel I've seen! Looks just as good as my stock all-black Momo wheel.

That is one brilliant job. It matches the existing colour of the wheel (slight very dark grey) perfectly! Even under the exposing harshness of camera flash (which even makes all the airbag covers seem to mis-match).

Awesome job.. Best money spent.. Its actually colour matched to the grey. Every thinks the wheels are black but they are actually grey..:)

True that, the wheel that came with my TL LE is black, but the Ralliart wheel that I bought for my Verada was a dark grey (plus the red bits of course).

What does everyone think would be a decent price to pay for one of these wheels (uncolour-coded)? I've seen them on eBay starting at $100 and with a buy it now price of $150. Is this reasonable or a little steep?
Also can anyone recommend a place in Melbourne that does a good job of dying these other than the place in Richmond mentioned a page back? Mainly just interested to know if anyone else in Melbourne got their's done professionally for less than $150.

It is what it is. I paid $40 for mine during the group buy, best price on eBay these days is around $100.

Mine is sitting on my desk atm waiting for dye money - $80 off ebay. *with* momo badge - Mitch :)

If you want one, ~$100 seems to be the going rate. Remember, the only other place to buy it from is Mitsubishi themselves, and it's 10x the price. It's not as good as the $40 that some of us paid, but that was basically at cost price.
Even at $100, its still cheaper than most aftermarket wheels out there, and is a ****load better

Got mine on eBay for $100 recently. I just wanted the great looks, but having driven with it, I feel it makes a real tangible difference to steering precision - probably because it's so good at communicating exactly where the steering wheel is at all times, by means of the various shapes and sections.
Highly recommended!
