View Full Version : Noob sorting out car audio
Hey, i was hoping someone in here could offer me some advice. At xmas i picked myself up some MTX 6x9's and 6's for the front and back. 6x9's are great, they are very punchy and offer excellent bass. Front 6's cannot seem to handle much output without severe distortion. Bear in mind that i am still using the mitsu head unit and standard speaker cabling. I also had to drill and align new holes for the 6's in the doors because they didnt quite match up. I ended up screwing them into the white plastic part behind the door trim. Would this be causing the distortion??
Second Q, i was given a sub yesterday from a mate who never used it. Its a Kicker EX 10" (i think) 250W affair, within ported box. Obviously i need an amp to power the thing, any reccomendations?? Might well need someone to install it for me, since i am not confident enough with wiring up electrics. If anyone knows of any good installers in the sydney area i would greatly appreciate it.
Hope someone can help!!

the mistu HU will only output about 4or 5 wrms from my experience with factory headunits maybe even less
basically the headunit is distorting the signla before it even reaches your speakers, an aftermarket headunit will do the same thing agian but at a higher level, amps are the only way to 'cure' this although its not a huge problem really

Front are stuggling with lack of power, poor installation ( I bet there is not deadening or absorbant pad) and full range signal input ( they should be high passed ).
Easiest way to fix this is to get a headunit that has an in-built high pass filter to boot unless you want to do it properly and get an amp.
Amp for the sub doesn't need to be anything special. Perhap you should look at a 4ch amp, run the fronts off Channel 1 and 2 and run the 10inch bridged off the rear. $200 for a Jaycar 4x 50WRMS will be plently for that set up. Add $40-50 for a wiring kit and your away.
thanks guys, i will pop into jaycar tomorrow and see what they have in the way of amps. Are Alpine still a good brand for HU? I heard there was some quality issues with them these days?

Meh, whats you budget and are there any requirements? I.e. USB, Ipod, 3 Preouts etc
budget prob 250 max, ipod compat is a must, and whatever is needed to control the simple set up of 1 amp and 1 sub

For that you will be best looking into Pioneers decks, for the money they are well spec'd. Alpine don't offer much till over $300. Eclipse are the same.
