I got rear ended by someone earlier today, the damage isn't that bad but now the boot won't shut (i opened boot to see if there was damage, it was closed until i opened it). How do I tie it down until it gets fixed? And is there any way that makes it secure so that if I leave it in a public area it is hard for someone to simply open it up (and if it's done by cables they might just take the cables off and break in)?

Hi Bohip
That's unfortunate re the accident, I take it you weren't hurt. Most people go for the octopus strap to hold it in place. Security wise this of course is no good. Can you access the boot via the back seat and secure it from the inside at all?
Be careful of exhaust fumes if the seal is compromised.
Hope you can get it fixed soon
cheers

I got two quotes for the damage, one is from a Mitsubishi dealer and it's $900 the other is from a panel beater and it's $3,000! I will post pics soon.

Are you sure not the other way around? Seems odd to me that Mitsu quoted $900 or maybe just the boot lid.....

$900 sounds like bumper bar & reo + bootlid... Structural damage to the boot entry will need to be dealt with by a panel beater.
Sorry to hear about the accident. With regards to closing the boot in a securish way, Octopus strap, hook one end to one of the holes in the inside of the bootlid then pull it down tight, wrap it around something as far under the car as you can get and hook it around itself.
If you want it to be extra secure, I've seen octopus straps with a ring on one end so you can hook it through itself, a hook on the other end (which you can hook to the inside of the lid like a said before, and an adjustable key lock in the middle which clips together, twists to tighten the cable and then locks tight with a key, that'd stop anyone from getting more than perhaps their fingertips in your boot. Unfortunately I don't know where to go to get one, only ever seen one in a mates garage once before. I'm pretty useless aye lol

Sorry to hear 'bout the damage bohip, you could try tying a bucket of sand hanging on the underside of the lid (or any heavy weight) to keep it shut. If you have any external signs of the boot not being able to lock, (occer straps etc) you will attract attention to this fact and some low life will want to open it.
Have you tried giving the lid one allmighty slam down?

yeah, right, suppose it does sound a little strange now I re-read it, BUT, did you understand what I was getting at? to give the bloke with the problem a few simple things to think about? To hang ANYTHING from the underside of the boot to keep it shut is better than your suggestion, ERRR, what WAS your suggestion again there BJ?
