Anyone know what the achille's heal in the 5speed autos for the FWDs is? Are they more reliable than the 4speeders?

My 5 speed cacked itself in my Ralliart, the change from 2-3 didn't always happen and would sometimes just find neutral for a couple of seconds. They told me that it isn't uncommon for a seal on a solenoid to crack or break or even just come off. The mechanic (in a Ralliart Dealer) said the solenoid pumps a shot of oil onto the next gear when it changes. He didn't pull it apart but was pretty sure that was the problem. Hope this helps a bit.

Apparently the early ones had a circlip that comes loose and gets into the pump and causes damage. It was fixed in the later autos though.

The only problem I have experienced with every single 5spd Auto I have driven is the massive (2-3 second) lag when you pop it from Reverse to Drive. I have never had the issue in any of the 4spd's I have owned/driven.

yeh i have had 2nd to third flaring issues too. Seemed to clear up after regular oil changes. I do mine every 30000km(full flush)

My 5 speed auto has been good even after a gave it a beating at wakefield 4 weeks ago. My car is at 202,000 kms thats right boys don't be shocked.

Oh yeah mines a 2003 TL VR-X

The auto has had 2 tranny flushes already.

I have that problem when I disconnected the battery..It flared like a bastard!!!

Took it to Parramatta mitsubishi and they connected the MUT-II and "re-educated it"

Been perfect since... doesn't flare and the changes are all soooooo smoooooth!!!!

They turn the Invecs-II off first to test if it's a mechanical problem... if it checks out then it's an electronic issue..

A relavent query- if the problem of 2nd to 3rd flare/slip is a mechanical fault with tranny, shouldn't it flare both on tippy and D mode? If it flares only at D and does not flare on tippy, isn't it more an INVECS/electrical issue?

What do you guys think?

I found with mine, is that it flares mostly in D, it'll still flare in tippy mode but not as bad.
so if it's mechanical it's POSSIBLE that it's a mechanical problem. BUT I'd take it to Mitso to relearn the INVECS system.

The tech at mitso told me it's a fairly common issue with the 5 speed semi auto's, the 4 speeds were generally free from this "feature"

They turn off the INVECS-II and test the transmission to see if it's mechanical or electronic. If it checks out ok mechanically then the reset the INVECS and hey presto all is fixed..

If anyone has a flaring issue go to Mitsubishi and ask to get a "re-learn" done on the transmission, before you pay ask to take it for a test drive with the tech and see what you think...they don't always get it perfect.
I've had mine done three times already....Blasted batteries. and one time returning cos the tech did a crap job.
(Parra Mitso, ask for Zivko- absolute legend when it comes to Magna's!!! (He also services my Evo too.)

Good thing is when it's done right the auto feels soooooooo good.... wish they could freeze that program so it doesn't change.... no point in having the car change gears at 3000rpm if your in traffic.

I'm using heaps less fuel too... from 12.7 L/100k's down to 10.1-10.8 L/100k's combined cycle.

i've always believed it was the oil pump in both the 4 and 5 speed that was the most common component to fail in them? Already had it happen to dads 4spd tj once.
