Hey all, first post.
I haven't been able to post until now so spent my time looking through the forum for what i could find on interior footwell lights and there aparent lack of in some models, the information I found was a bit disjointed so I thought I would put my findings in a thread.
I used to have a TR Elite which had all the bits like key light and footwell lights then purchased a TJ 2002 Magna Advance.
No footwell lights and no key light, wanting to have a few of the bits I was used to and reading other posts I found that the loom is there for the foot well lights but not utilised.
Went to the wreckers and found that the left and right hand white coloured plastic footwell lens from a TR TS model magna fits the footwell light cover of the TJ, unplugged the grey light fitting/globe holder which also fitted the TJ and then attempted to locate the plugs in the TJ.
In the passenger side the grey footwell plug was tucked up into the loom inside the small gap just behind the glove box and had sufficient wire to pull out and clip to the light fitting.
The drivers side I located after a bit of searching actually taped to the main loom, after a bit of wiggling the clip comes away from the binding and the lead to it is covered in a small black plastic sleeve.
There are two clips in the same vicinity, one is grey (the footwell plug) the other is white, both bound to the loom the same way neither are loose.
Hope this helps someone else.

this ,l guess is the beauty of forums like this,l have wanted to do this mod for ages but never really looked into it,and now...thanks..its off to u-pull-it l go.......i take it a TH Sports is going to have the same wires hidden?...does the glovebox need to come out...one mod i did do succesfully was install the map reading lights and centre large interior lights from a TS Verada into my car....now if l could only get some rear map reading lights...

Just have a really bright torch, I didn't have to take the glovebox out. When you pull the plastic cover off in the footwell that holds the light you will see a small gap, shine the torch up in there. Being built like a brick **** house I can't get into the footwell, I used the wife's compact mirror to find the connection on the left side of the gap and in the driver's side also.
Smaller paragraphs would be good in your posts, that opening one is really hard to read.:P
In the 3rd gens I believe it was a Verada only thing, the TR Elite was very much a Verada, in someways more so than the KR Ei, which would explain those additions. Owning a Verada, I've got both the things you speak of :D
I'd rather just install some footwell neons. UV footwells look awesome, had them in my 88 rolla.

I just went and checked my 2002 TJ Advance, and sure enough, the little grey plugs are there. Now to find a couple of plug cables and globe covers. I don't suppose it's the same deal for the ignition light wiring?
Does anyone know if they're available as a spare from MMAL? Price? (it's almost F1 GP time on Sunday night so I can't call them!)

 ..well i looked and looked and pulled the glovebox out and gave myself a stiff neck looking under the dash, but there were no sign of those damm plugs...im assuming because mine is a TH the plugs arent in the loom....any advice as to how l might find the right wires to splice into...and i gather there wont be any in the rear for the rear map lights....

cant say i looked to hard for them, maybe they are there. I just spliced into the existing door lamp wiring to install mine. This sounds like a good way too.
Since we are talking about wiring looms for lights, anybody know if the wiring loom for the
red door lights exists for the rear doors on models without them? I noticed that my rear
doors just have an indented shape for the rear door lights but no actual light. I know that
the Xis do.

....okay....which loom and what color wires were they....i assumed that the door wires were just an earthing switch.so where did you get your power from....????????

the left and right hand white coloured plastic footwell lens from a TR TS model magna fits the footwell light cover of the TJInteresting piece of info. Just so the 3rd-genners know, ALL of the 2nd-gens had these lenses, but only some of them were utilised (at least for the passenger well). So you don't need to search for a specific model. On that note, the plug/light is the same for drivers and passengers side, so you can just raid the driver's of a couple (think ALL models had the drivers light?)

Not all 2nd gens had bulbs - I just searched through about 6 2nd gen Magnas at the wreckers in Queanbeyan and only the Verada had bulbs (both sides). They all had driver and passenger side lenses.
The lenses on 3rd gen are different on each side of the car - I know cos the ones I got this morning won't fit the passenger's side of my TJ!
I think I actually grabbed two driver's side lenses, so tomorrow I'll see if the 2nd gen passengers ones are different too.
Anyway, I've got a working footwell light on the driver's side, so I'm pretty happy with that :)
Update: 2nd gen passenger side lenses are a different shape to the driver's side (just like in 3rd gens).

Sorry if i didn't mention it, but yes the covers on the passenger side are slightly larger than that on the drivers side.
You need to get one from each side. I scrounged through u pull it and half the TR TS models I checked had the light covers.
On a seperate note anyone know anything about the key light? Is the wiring there in a TJ advance? and if so what is needed to get it operational.

I'd like to know more about the ignition lights too.
My Gregorys manual wiring diagram has the ignition light coming off a black wire from an adjacent control box. Don't know if the black wire is actually installed though. My Dad's Altera has one... they do the job nicely.
BTW I found out today that the "L" shape footwell light bulb holder is $16.50 from MMAL (!)
I didn't buy it!

I don't suppose the 2nd-gen ignition light ring would fit? Could retrofit one, would be much easier to hook up then.

i think that the whole problem as such is the wiring...retrofitting one wont do the trick as you still need to wire it up...i had a look at mine the other day and all i think all you need to do is source a bulb holder that takes a T5 globe,a la cigar lighter and install it..ive been frustrated about not being able to find the plugs to hook up my footwell lights, as i did get the bulb holders and covers from u-pull-it for $5.00, so ive decided to make a mini loom and take the power from the interior light wire that runs up the A pillar and use a earth from somewhere to complete the circuit..a job for the weeked..will keep you all informed...

I did this mod on my TJ VR-X.
Got All the parts from pick and payless for $10....
all the Magna's have these wires. just look for the plugs.
the 90 degree bulb holders plug into these.
whole job takes 10 minutes...
Don't have to take much apart.... usually the plastic panel below the steering wheel and the panel below the glovebox and the plugs are right there...
Looks great with some high powered T10 LEDS!

..bit the bullet and did mine on the weekend, lucky people those TJ people,as there is nothing in a TH,anyway, grabbed a ignition switch bulb holder fron a 2nd gen, though any T5 bulb holder will do and joined all the wires together..ie,the two footwell lights and the ignition light and spliced one side into the white/red wire that runs down the a-pillar and after much frustration, and looking at the cd/rom wiring diagram, deduced that i had to plug into fuse 11...now it works a treat...footwell lights,IGNITION SWITCH light and it all works off all four doors and with the remote....though the only thing is the ignition light comes on as well when you open the door,oh well..as originally it comes off the bem...but who cares...i now have my footwell light and my ignition key light...now for those rear map
lights....

So i take it then that the TJ has the plug somewhere in the loom for the ignition light and the fitting is there to plug the bulb in?

Thats pretty sweet man, So you just spliced into the fusebox and now its all working factory pretty much? Pretty neat! Pity all exec 2nd gens had all the extra wiring taken out

dont really know..from what ive been able to figure out only the altera and veradas had it,not having a TJ cant help you...but the ignition ring does have the fitting for a bulb and it doesnt have to come from a 2nd gen ,as all it needs is a bulb holder that takes a T5 globe..ie:ashtray,cig lighter etc.....and by the way..it does look really good having the ignition key ring light up at night..ive put a red led in and ..mmm mmm

I've been scrounging around the wreckers again and have only gotten so far with wiring up the ignition light in my tj advance.
Found in the wiring schematics that the ignition plug comes off the loom in the same area the footwell light plugs do on the drivers side. In an earlier post I noted that I had found a white connector as well as the grey footwell connector tied to the loom.
The white connector is for the ignition light and the wires to it should be a black wire with blue stripe and a red wire with a black stripe.
Found (mentioned in another post but cannot give credit as I can't remember where) that if the ignition switch has a clear ring around it then it has a bulb holder in it, situated on the bottom right hand side of the ignition lock as you look at it. The bulb fitting is the same as what fits into the ashtray and cigarette lighter.
Couldn't find a lead and connector to fit in any verada I looked at so I would say that the small lead is pretty well like finding Hen's teeth.
Located a lead, bulb fitting and plug from a TS magna that had a clear light ring fitted around the ignition switch but the plug is the incorrect type and will not fit the TJ.
In the TS inside the console is a switch situated at the rear of the automatic gear selector, white in colour it slides onto a plastic holder and has two wires coming from it, I think it may be for an ashtray light but not sure. Any way I removed this switch cut the centre of it out and the TJ ignition plug will slide straight into it
Do a bit of soldering to the lead with the globe on and then it all should fit together.
Good in theory but I haven't been able to get my arm up under the dash far enough to fit the globe into the holder, will have to find a neighbourhood kid with a skinny arm to try for me.

yep if my memory serves me correct then the loom you got off the ts had 4 wires in it,if you have the plug in your loom either splice into or cut the plug off your ts one and find one to siut ,as far as installing it ,its not so hard to take off the lower dash panel and undo the two screws that allow access to the ignition ring...keep trying as it does look really good...

I bought a 1.2W 12V bulb for 90¢ at Jaycar (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL2670&CATID=21&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=402) today. The bulb is very close in size to a T5.
It has about 10cm of wire attached to each terminal. I just found the white ignition light socket (thanks!) and shoved the wires in. It lights up :-)
I'll insert the bulb into the ignition light receiver, secure it with duct tape and use terminal connectors to connect the wire to the white socket's wiring.
That's the theory, anyway.
PS any suggestions for whether a coloured bulb cap/condom is used on the stock installs? The ignition ring seems to be clear, so green/blue/whatever would come through.

Fairly sure the stock ones are white? I've got a red sleeve on my 2nd gen one, and the 2nd gen assemblies I've seen are definitely just a bare bulb.

I just did my bodgy wiring job for an ignition light (see post above). The bulb fits in the hole fine and it lights up great!
I took off the lower panel cover, used the footwell bulb for illumination while working and accessed the ignition bulb holder location by popping out the electric mirror switch. It's only held in with tape, but it only weighs a few grams so I think it will hold.
Yay!

...and now so is mine (I used a bulb cap). Makes the ignition ring look "grey" when the light is on.
