ok, so after taking my car to the mechanic on friday and expecting just a service/tune, i get a call telling me it has a cracked head, and its going to be close to $1800 to fix. so it got me thinking is it worth putting in a new engine. i can get a pretty cheap 2nd hand 4 banger from the wreckers but it has close to 200,000 kms on it. so my question is, is it worth putting in a 4G63 in and what is the process of getting it in, will it work out cheaper to get it fixed or whack in the VR4 engine. help appreciated guys.
Will this engine fit directly?

I doubt it'll be a perfect, direct fit, as it'd from a smaller car. Also, even if you got it to fit (been done before), then you'd have to get an engineers cert.

Man bummer luck thats crap news :( (so much for me borrwing it:bowrofl: )
I would say for your car, it wouldn't be worth it, in the sense of, if you wanted this to be a looker and a goer, the damage you have on the RHS? of the car will cost a pretty penny to get fixed, Might be worth trying to sell this (Minus mods) and purchase another 2nd gen (Possibly V6 eh?) In better condition..
Lucifer, yann89, and myself have gone through the pain and headf*** of doing the heads (or head) and I'm telling you now its NOT worth it. It's really NOT worth the money, pain, everything.

yeah man, im sort of tossing up between that and new engine. the car has only done 150,000km so it is in good nick besides the cracked head, and i dont think i'll get much for it having the damage on the doors etc etc.

You can still fetch about $2500 if you find the right buyer...
Ask yann where he got his motor from, think its an import with like only 50K on it

You could put the 4G63 engine in, but you'll find your costs will be multiplied by 5. With the addition of course of problems that arise later. Secondly, is the car worth it to you to put said engine in and have it all done? You could purchase a full Galant VR4 for the cost of the conversion, and then have enough left over to put a sound system in it :)

What motor has Yann got?
Our TR cracked a head about 6 or 7 months ago, set us back ~$1100 to fix it. Took a bit over a week for the mechanic to do. Would you consider just getting the head repaired if it was closer to the grand? I can put you on to our mechanic if you want another quote?

He rebuilt a standard astron to put in his, apparently revs to 6 grand now, thats an Astron genuinely off its head lol

I got myself a second-hand 4G54 from japan from a place called "Engines Plus" in Cheltenham. It's done approx 50,000km's and comes with 6month warranty. Before the dude gave it to me, he replaced the piston rings and timing chain/counter balance chain kit and all the gaskets. I'm pretty happy with it.

Is that still with balancing shafts? or were those removed?
