Hi Guys

Well it's been a while, a year or so, but now i'm back. Basically the TL has had an engine noise every morning on cold start, when the car has been sitting arround for a day or two.

The noise is simmilar to a belt hitting a cover or something of that nature, it increases with RPM and so forth but only hangs arround for 10-15 seconds and only when DEAD cold, does not make a sound otherwise

I have checks oil pressure, not a big end sound. Valves seam fine. Noise is coming from the LH side where the timming gear is and only that side.

I have not had a look yeat properly as i will be pulling the covers and wheel of today to have a look. All the belts are nice and tight, timming belt is fina also as i took teh top cover off it.

The car has traveled 98K fully serviced. I will take a short video of the noise tomorrow i hope.

Has anyone experianced this or could point me in the right direction.

it's normal for a Magna, have a look at all moving parts to see it's not hitting anything else.

I've given up chasing clicks and squeaks comming from the front section of the car. Like you say, they all go away when the car warms up.

My KJ does the exact same thing. Ive given up on solving it as it doesnt seem to affect the running of the car.

It is due for a timing belt anyway. You mention its fine but I presumed you haven't changed it? I would replace it if its due and reassess the situation afterwards

ok so i took all the bellts of, and i think i found it, the power stearing tensioner has a loos bearing, but i will reserve judgement till i start it tomorrow with no belts at all.

Has the timing belt been changed? If it hasn't, your on borrowed time and could need a rebuild/new engine if it goes.

Hi Mate, yeah i know it's just due for a service now, so i will be doing it soon. I have actually inspected teh belt and components, and they are all fine.

Well i started the engine with no accilaries on last nigh, and no noise.

I put the powe stearing belt on and tensioner and the noise came back. The noise still sounds like it's comming form somewhere near the harmonic balancer.

I have tried to record it, but it didn't work. I will try again tomorrow.

I am wondering if possibly the belt is putting force on the crank somehow and it's hitting something.

It still doesn't sound like a big end at all, hopefully not an oil pump or something?

Could also be power stearing pump.

TA

Any ideas anyone.

did you ever find what this problem was.

since ive had my timing belt done I've noticed this happens on cold starts, didn't happen before i dont think.

the other thing i can hear is a belt slipping when the aircon is on.
also after my timing belt was replaced.

cars at smash repairs, but i think i might take it to a new mechanic when i get it back. didn't like the other 1. or i do it or myself.

Do these cars have a hydraulic timing belt tensioner? if so it could be delay in oil pressure to the tensioner causing some belt slap on cold start?

I vaguely remember someone on here having a similar problem and putting it down to one of the bearings on a pulley? Not sure which one though...

Might just get a mechanic to look at it, as i have no idea what to look at.

Sounds like the pre-tensioner.

I had what sounds like a similar problem in my KJ. Was like a loud rattle/noisy lifters sound. goes for about 15 seconds then is silent. SLowely gets worse over time.

Ended up being the belt pre-tensioner. My car was just about at 100,000km/s so i had the timing belt changed as well as the pre-tensioner as they are in the same area.

Wasnt cheap for the part for memory though.

yeh i might speak to the mechanic and see if he remembers what he changed when he did the timing belt. i know the pre-tensioner is recommended at the same time. but i dont know if he did it or not.
