View Full Version : Fuel consumption on the 380

My 380 seems to be giving 14.8l/100km around the eastern suburbs. Is this reasonable or bad? Thought the motor magazine tested it at 10.8l/100km?

Umm, that would be real world consumption. It will depend massively on traffic and driver behaviour.

I'm averaging low 12s these days, but use M4 twice a day. I have also noticed I can keep ecomony lower if always driving in auto mode; it always goes up with you go to tiptronic mode (but is much more fun to drive, especially with straight-thru muffler, intake, etc etc). I rarely see anything in the 10s, and personally couldn't drive it that gracefully for long enough.

i get 12.2 in stop start traffic on the monash but with crappy tires i got 11.8 but with interstate driving i get 8-9 so 10.8 is possible. i use vortex cause of my crappy caltex card.

You guys are just gonna have to get chipped :P
I get 8.8l/100KM on the hwy every week, if I get low 9s I feel peeved (usually because I've put the boot in a bit much)
Today drove around Brisbane city and was miffed to get 9.5 :D
If I tow I get mid 10s.

They would get pretty close to that on the freeway, they must boot it a bit, I'm gettin 12-15 on gas (no freeway), not caring about the price of motion lotion. Its always 61.9 cpl around the corner.
Better milage now I take the baby to daycare every day.

I'm getting roughly 12.1-12.5 around the city drops to high 10's low 11's driving on the highway though, I'm defiantly going to get mine chipped if only to save some money in the long run....now to save up the money for it :(

The thing I've noticed after chipping is not so much how low I can get a spot consumption but how overall the consumption has dropped in the mixed and city driving.
When I think I've used a lot of fuel because of heavy acceleration or uphill driving or traffic crawls (happens a bit on the Gateway), it turns out I'm only using into the low 9s. Before it would be in the 12s.
So I never get into the 11s or above, ever. I think that would only happen if I was traffic light GPing - or on a club cruise lol

I'm sure you've posted it before but whats this chip all about? Cost? Whats involved? Point me to a post if needed :) Thats awesome consumption .. definately accurate? How many kms to a tank do you get roughly?

It looks like chipping is definately worth it then, if you can save around 3 litres per 100km (especially if you're not planning to sell out any time soon). And of course there's the power side of it too.
I'd definately be interested in doing this considering these gains, and would consult with those who have chipped, further down the line.

Have a good look at the "Search for Tuning" thread.
The upshot of it is, there are currently two chips that have been used so far; the Chip Torque Exede and the Unichip Q .
They are both in the region of 1300-1500 fitted and tuned depending on whether you want dual or single maps. A single map would be enough IMO unless you really want to develop the car more or use it for track/club.
The chip allows a better tune under acceleration than standard and doesn't waste as much fuel. When the car is cruising or in "closed loop" mode it makes no difference - the ECU uses 02 readings, load, temp etc every few milliseconds to achieve the best burn. This is why anyone with the same mods as me, but without the chip, will achieve the same economy on the hwy. However, under throttle when the ECU comes out of closed loop, the chip extracts more power from less fuel. So whenever you are not cruising the chip will make a positive difference.
Overall, a chip will increasingly look more attractive as fuel prices rise.

Must be my heavy foot then, if I'm getting 14.8, although it's always start stop in the suburbs, never on the freeway or hwy. Checked the average speed, and it was something like 45km/hr. Would it be worth changing the chip considering the type of trips I make ?

my average is 57.2  drove home on the monash the other day and its 80km/h limit outbound wouldn't be so bad if u could actually do 80

Anyone here who had a TJ before. how does the TJ compare with 380 fuel consumption.
I have a TJ auto and am happy with the consumption. Thinking of getting a 380.

i had a TJII and the 380 is a bit heavyer on the juice, around .5l /100ks more.

Forgot to ask you earlier, about what you said here... what about a map for regular 91 (or 95 with 10% ethanol, for the cheaper option) and then a map for 98. Would that be a sensible option? Or are the maps intended for changes more drastic?

Not sure about Knotches chip but mine can have 5 maps for different fuels or whatever scenerio you want. If you had a high powered turbo car you could say do a valet map for when its getting serviced so they cant thrash it. I have a 98 & 100 map done in mine.
