View Full Version : How to change steering wheel, 3rd gen.
I feel so stupid asking this, but no ones actually said anywhere on here how to change the wheel on the car.
I've been told I need a Torx #27 screwdriver to remove the air bag cover thingo, which I have. I presume I need to remove the 2 torx screws, one either side of the wheel through the round holes. Now heres my problem, if I use the #27 screw driver it goes in but spins freely, no hope of gripping the screw let alone turning it. If I try using a #30 it fits in and grips perfectly (so much for #27 right), but no matter how much force I put on the screw to turn, it won't budge (even tried using power tools).
Is there a trick to removing this, or do I have the only 3rd gen ever built that has a non-removable steering wheel
What confuses me is the wheel was replaced only a few months back for roadworthy when I bought the car, how could it be jammed on so tight already?

One of my screws was so tight my stepdad had to drill it out. I actually twisted a torx tip because it was so insanely tight.

I just changed my TE steering wheel and it was easy as and only had phillips head screws. Took about 15 minutes start to finish

Hmm..I saw that before, forgot about it. Cheers
Are there any special techniques anyone knows of with the torx screws, mine are so tight even when I put the torx bit in the drill it won't turn, it actually spins the drill around before it'll move. I'm failing miserably at this
I've discovered my issue, one screw head is stripped so ill be buggered if I can get that out period, and the other one is a T30 (has to be a T30 fits perfectly but T27 screwdriver is loose) and it won't budge, so I'd say they've fitted a screw bigger than whats supposed to be in there and ****ed it up on me. The wheel got replaced under roadworthy like I said, and now its irremovable.
Reckon I've got a case if I go back to the place that did the roadworthy complaining that they didn't change it properly by using the wrong stuff now making it near impossible to remove?

Well it should definitely be a T30 as I changed my wheel last night. When I originally removed my wheel another time, the torx screws were very tight to the point where they made that cracking sound when undone. I had to lock the wheel in place and then use a lot of force to get them un-done. So the T30 should be the right piece and that they are tight might not be unusual.

Are you sure a 1cm drill bit? That'd surely drill out more than just the screw.
How long are T30's, don't want to end up in the air bag with the drill lol

10mm drillbit will take the end off the screw/bolt, which is what you want, so do it...

Call me stupid, but I've never had to drill out a screw before, whats the point in just drilling the head out? How do I get the rest out then?

if its centrered like luci says the head will come off and then the airbag comes out and from the dozen or so ive done with a drill the rest comes out with fingers or pliers. its tight cuase of the tension from the head but if some idiots used loctite then its pliers.
