Every now and then my car starts blowing out some wierd smelling smoke. Its happened a couple of times in bumper to bumper traffic. and once another time during a normal drive.
I assumed it might have something to do with idling the car for too long cause the first 2 times it happened the car was at a basic stop for about 2 hours... (bloody chapel st)
I have no clue what it is.. what do yous recon ?
where is the smoke coming from? exhuast? or under the bonnet? you could have an old radiator hose which could be leaking coolant onto somethin hot, making it steam up........

its coming form the exhaust.. didnt mention that earlier. sorry
does your car blow a bit of smoke when u first start it up after its been sitting there for a few hours?
if yes, then both that, and the problem u described earlier, are due to worn Valve Stem Seals. These seals stop oil from getting into the combustion chamber and when they wear oil slowly seaps through them which is why u get the smoke on startup or after the car has been idling for a long time.
My Valve stem seals are on the way out too, but i dont have money to fix them atm so they're gonna have to stay like that for a while.
Just be sure u top your oil up regularly.

And yes, now that i think about it, i do remember it blowing out this smoke at startup once or twice.
not sure about the price range.....wont be cheap though the head has to come off.......
cheaper to buy a bottle of oil and top-up i think

Valve stems cost around $40, i think holden ones are the same as the Magna, well thats what i got told from Mitsubishi when i changed mine on the old engine, but get a professional to change them, its hard *** work on ya own unless u are a professional or u have done it before

The Job is not all that hard, Did Lethal's not that long ago and no the head does not have to come off.
The seals are cheap enough, just the time to do them.
PM me if you need a hand

Yup, you've got a nice case of valve stem seals :(
As Mal said, he did mine late last year (as well as some other work that was due). Its been perfect ever since! The only down side...I can't hire my car out as a smoke machine anymore ;)
