View Full Version : Lowered 380 with big wheels???

I recently upgaded my wheels from 18 to 19's with 245/40 tyres which caused the rear tyres to scrub when going over bumps. I got the guards rolled but it still occurred & then I found out it was actually the plastic cover inside the rear wheel arches which was rubbing. The car is lowered with Kings SuperLows front & Lows rear but for some strange reason still sat about 15mm - 20mm lower at the rear. I didnt want to go all the way back up to standard spring height on the rear, just bring it up about 15mm to hopefully stop the scrubbing & keep the gap between tyre & wheel arch the same front & rear. Pedders wanted $430 to fit new springs on the rear which would raise it between 7mm to 10mm which I thought was pretty pricey. Took it back to the suspension place today that originally lowered it & they simply fitted a 15mm spacer beneath (?) the rear springs which brought the back up level with the front for a cost of $150 including labour. The good news is, the rear tyres no longer rub.

I'm sharing this with everyone as I would think as time goes by, more & more people will be buying 380's and eventually lowering & fitting bigger wheels. If you have the same dramas I did, spacers are a cheaper option than replacing the springs.

Funny, I never had any problems with scrubbing from mine and I had 20" and lowered all round by about 20mm.

One of the things that stop me lowering is the effect on handling balance.
As Type40 found, going to Super Lows made the car more responsive to steering, i.e. go cart like, but it became more understeery on the limit.
One of the main attractions for me with the 380 over the older car is the option for oversteer with the stock sports suspension. Ok, I don't often go into a corner slightly over the grip of the tyres to achieve it but I like the fact it's available and I have done it once at high speed and it's just awesome. Any other non-specialised FWD would be in the trees.

So I don't want to lose that trait. Maybe just Lows would still leave that balance. I'll wait for more feedback from those who make the change.

What springs did you go with to only it drop it 20mm?? Everywhere I went, I was told the smallest drop would be 30mm.

It is odd that mine scrubbed & yours didnt on 20's.....it could be that the offset on my wheels gave a deeper dish & also I was lowered about 35mm as opposed to your 20mm. I also spoke to Type 40 who was lowered on 19" & he never had dramas either however he had 245/35 tyres where mine are 245/40...perhaps that extra few mm of tyre height was all it needed to rub on something. Either way, its fine now & have I have an equal gap between tyre & wheel arch front & rear & that is what I wanted.

PS Off topic but whats the latest with the Clubby mods????

Geez...what springs...umm, was done at Pedders. Thats all I remember, mine was the first one done in the ACT so was proud to be a bit of a trailblazer there.

Interesting that you ask about the Clubby, coincidently it is booked in for next monday (2nd June) to spend a couple of days with my mates at Gentech in Canberra. Mods being done are ORSSOM OTR, Maff tune (retaining Maff due to Canberra's cold winters), 1 3/4" Headers, High Flow metal substrate cats and 2.5" X-Force exhaust system. Topped off by a nice tune, should be good to go: :bouncin: :dancin:

Just took a look at your picture then the similar one I posted up...there doesnt seem to be much of a difference in height happening there?? Maybe it is the offset??
