I've been Trawling the interwebz, as one does. AND I was wondering if any can shed some light on the GDI engine, which the Kiwi's got under the bonnet of their mid 90's Diamante. What is it, how is it better/worse than the SOHC? Other than the big ugly silver thing, what's the difference underneath? (Here are some pics for your veiwing pleasure)

Discuss.

(BTW GDI doesn't stand for Global Defense Institution, i know i was shattered too lol)

Im sure ill be corrected:) ,
To the best of my knowlege, GDI stands for Gasoline Direct Injection and Mitsubishi would not bring this tech to Aus because apparently at the time the fuel quality was to rubbish (too much sulphur etc).
Also, the Magna/Verada twins were low cost versions of the JDM Diamante, (essentially a Honda Legend/Lexus ES competitor) The technology may have added too much to the base cost of every unit to become viable in the small numbers of the V6 Mitsubishi made locally.

With GDI, the injector sits in the compression chamber. Supposedly it allows for much more accurate mixtures, and as far as I know there's a reasonable power increase. You're also not waiting for a valve to open; with GDI you can inject fuel whenever you want to.

So basically it uses high octane fuels with greater knock, because of the increase in the compression chamber. So it's a performance engine??? Like a higher tuned 6G72? or something compeletly different

from what i got out of the article, the only reason we can't use GDI is because the cat can't handle our dirty fuel. so if we decided to keep the dirty emissions and use a diff cat/no cat, could it work then. apart from it being illegal.

what about using say 98ron. would it still be the same deal, or is that cleaner?
