View Full Version : Simple painting?
Hey guys,
I'm on a very tight budget this pay with my repair bill and all so I'm just going to fix up all the damaged black paint around the car (ie. black borders around the windows, wiper arms).
Simple question here, so sand these pieces back and re-paint them, what kind of supplies will I need?
This is one that really needs doing, around the windows is turning white and the black bits on the sides of the windows and wiper arms are bubbling.
Just need to know what I will need to re-paint them Sable Black and what is the best brand on a budget.
Also keep in mind I have never painted anything in my life :P
I know I need sandpaper, paint, and clearcoat but other then that I'm lost.
Cheers,
Dean

1) Get new wiper arms - $20 - no painting needed.
2) Forever black - supercheap auto - $20ish, Its a dye, so it will dye all your rubbers back to black
Effort required is much less then what you had up there:P
Hoped that helped....

OR
on that one, do what i did because the black on the window seals wasnt black and shiny enough for me anymore:
Go into Woolies and buy a thing of black SHOE POLISH - its suprisingly hard to find - try ilse 9, thats where it was in my local woolies and dont count on the staff knowing what or where it is either!
cost me all of $3.50!! get one of the ones with the sponge applicator on the bottle - very little mess and it looks pretty goodly too! (dodgy i know, but meh it looks good IMO being black again)
cheap and easy fix for the colouring of the window seals - and if you get a waxy one, itl repel water as well.
The parts I'm looking at painting are actually metal. local wreakers wiper arms are all the same as mine. Bubbled like crazy. Sun damage I guess.
I now they are metal because the paint actually faded off completely, I can see bare metal in places.

are you going to spray paint, or use a paint brush?
spray will give a smoother cleaner finish (esp with black) but means you need to put newspaper EVERYWHERE to save for overspray..
i didnt think the wiper arms where clearcoated?
take your time when spraying, do light coats to avoid the paint running, allow at least an hour before putting a second coat on too.
other than that, its pretty easy to paint stuff - only way you can go wrong is in the surface prep, make sure its clean and free of oil and the like and you should be good to go :)
Most likely going to sand, prime, brush paint+sand a few coats, then clearcoat. Problem is I don't know what kind of sandpaper, paint type etc.. to use, colour will be a nice glossy sable black. Just need to know what kind of supplies I need.
As for spraying, how would I do that? Can't really use spray paint... too low quality.

It's actually caused by electrolysis, alloy is notoriously hard to get paint to stick to. There is a product made by Azko Nobel under the brand name "International" called PA10. It's an etch primer specifically made for aluminum, we use it a lot in the marine industry.

Now, that one was helpful! Any idea where I can pick this up from?
Also, what kind of sandpaper would I use to get the other crap off?

Most chandlery's sell PA10(or equivalent in another brand). I'd use about a 400G to clean the gunk off then use 1200G w&d to prepare the surface for painting.

dont forget thinners/wax and grease remover...i'd personally use the thinners. this is an easy way to get rid of silicone/oils etc...if these are present and u spray on them it will bubble. not sure if it happens with the brushing method, but pretty sure it would.
