View Full Version : Fitting extra 12v sockets TF Magna

OK, we all know how many gadgets we can have in a car that need 12v sockets now. For me, GPS, DVD player for the kids, bluetooth carkit charger and 2 x phone chargers. But, of course, I only have 1 socket. So; questions;

- the 3 way 12v splitters I see on ebay - are they safe?

- would it be possible to safely mount them where the current cig lighter and ash tray is - again safely?

- how hard to run a 12v socket to the back seat in the back of the centre console?

and the big one

- will my battery and Magna handle (say) 3 devices plugged in at once?

Regards, Tony

If your gonna do that, maybe buy the ciggie lighters from supercheap or somewhere, then run the 12v's to them and mount them where ever. I plan on doing this for a car charger, mounting a second ciggie lighter underneath the console, so I can permanently have my charger plugged in, but then its not a powerful device so I'm not worried about it draining anything.

Wouldn't be trusting cheap ebay stuff with 12v power splitting in my car, but then whats to say the gear you get from places like supercheap is any better sometimes.

All depends on the load, all the things you have mentioned chew up nothing. So would be fine to piggyback off the one charger. Make sure you wire it up properly. solder and heatshrink and you wont have any dramas.

Could always just fit some USB ports in the dash (Power only). Would allow for use of lots of devices :)

I'd say adding another 12v lighter socket would be simpler and more useful than a USB port lol

Meh, Creating a usb port is fairly simple, also a lot more streamline (ie. 4 ports takes the space of 1 cig lighter port). As for the usefulness, look at how many usb devices are available these days :P

If you get a KJ verada driverside footwell cover it has another 12v socket in it.

I agree, in fact putting USB ports in my glovebox is on my project list. I could charge my phone, GPS, ipod and the like, as well as the passengers stuff. And leaves the cig lighters free for anything that needs it. And it looks much neat having stuff hidden in the glovebox, than ugly things sticking out the cig lighter.

OR to make things easier if you go supercheap we got an aerpro adaptor thingy with 2 x 12V sockets and 2 x USB sockets to charge off - much easier

i mounted an extra socket, in the rear of the single din tray under my headunit, cant see it as its dark in there, and you could mont 2 in there if you wanted to

Yeh, my main problem is I dont like stuff sticking out the cig lighter all the time. I thought about the DIN pocket, but didnt think like you said that it might be hard to access and see. I guess I can also just chuck a GPS and ipod hidden away in the glovebox while its charging.

How are those aepro things though, if its not too bulky it might be easier to get one of those, stick it in the glovebox and hardwire it in.

For running a phone charger, would there be any issue in powering the additional hidden 12v socket off the same accessory line as the headunit?

It is to the right of the steering wheel, kinda where your right knee would hit if you had the seat too far forward. It doesnt have a cover on it and kinda doesnt look like anything. But its definetly there.

Is it visible when the dash is all together, or do you have to take the footwell cover off to expose it? I don't know about you, but my right knee is roughly where the ignition is if i put my seat too far forward.

Mine is visible, pretty much rite below the ignition. I've been lookin thru some pics of other veradas and cant see it......maybe it is custom.

I reckon its aftermarket, pretty random spot to have a 12v power socket.

Definitely aftermarket. If it were factory it wouldn't be in such a random place, nor would it be exposed like that without a cover of sorts. Odd place to have it, must have had a two way or something installed at one point.
