View Full Version : How to change the backlight on 3rd gen climate control to LEDs?

Hi All
I have searched a few threads and I know a few members have done this before, but I was wondering whether someone could please post a how to for changing the backlighting of the climate control to LEDs, specifically say, using quality components from Jaycar etc.
Previous threads were not really specific, I understand how to pull the dash and the HVAC unit apart, however when it comes to LEDs, I have NFI.
What I do gather though is that a quality LED, with a 100 ohm resistor is required, together with (I assume) a small degree of soldering?
I think Jay and Jason (Ego) have done this before so any detailed how to explaination of the actual install of the LED would be appreciated.
I also understand that there is the easy "cop-out" with bulb covers.
Thanks
Dave.

For the record I would not be bothering soldering or messing about with your air con, too easy to stuff it up in my opinion.
There are now LEDs on eBay that come with the little black twisty things that will fit right into the right place. I just ordered some after waiting for these to come out and im really excited about them.
basically as you know behind things such as your instrument cluster there are wedge bulbs with the little black twist-in bulb holders, well the ones behind the dials of your air con are smaller and you cant just plonk in a wedge bulb, you need the specialized ones. Just pull your air con apart carefully undoing all the screws and you'll see 'em.
link here, sorry but it is ebay dont kill me. refer to the medium sized bulbs in this listing they should be the right size.

I have used this shop HEAPS for LEDs for my interior and they are EXCELLENT!!!! They seriously have everything and i highly recommend them. LED's can die though over time, but they are so cheap just order a few spares (e.g. I have some xenon white high output LEDs for my parkers and after 6 months (and heaps of driving) one of them has started to flicker on and off, but for a few dollars, who cares!)
BTW I have a second gen so i could be all wrong relating to your car so take this with a pinch of salt!
Cheers.

yeah they only just came out. after dealing with the seller heaps in the past, i sent the seller an email basically alluding to marrying him/her because i was so excited they finally started making them haha. no more worrying about manually modding the lights.
seriously though, if you want leds for any car, buy from this seller, they have EVERYTHING!!!!:D

I wonder if he could do red LEDs for the neo wedge.....

Eventually he might, I asked but usually what he has is what you get, so blue or xenon white for the moment. Keep asking and waiting and it might happen. I couldn't decide to go blue (matching the rest of my interior lights) or white so I ordered about 20 of each to do mine, should come sometime this week. I'll send some over to try out if you would like because im not going to use them all. PM me!
Let me say, the xenon white parkers and map lights i bought off him look AWESOME, much better than the dull yellow standard ones.

I just asked him that exact question, and he's already gotten back to me saying no
Maybe the sudden influx of people asking might change his mind! :D

There are other LED suppliers on ebay selling similar stuff, but I havn't searched for the Neo Wedge because I didn't know what it was called until recently...
Edit: Searched for "Neo Wedge" and "T4".... nothing

This is why i like not having series 2 TJ as it is a lot easier to change by the sounds of things.
Im fairly sure RS may do coloured ones which may help.

RS are RS, their pricing is always ridiculous:rant:
From my brief searching, I so far haven't found any red ones of a half-decent price, so might still end up soldering my own. There's usually plenty of room behind them, so could just have the resistor sitting behind (appropriately insulated, of course!)
Also note that most of these ones look very long in the front, might have to carefully measure to make sure there is actually enough room to fit them!

I will let you guys know how I go with my car when I get them.
Hopefully they come on or before Thursday coz i'm heading down to the snow for the weekend.
Wish it was snowing lol.......

Can you remember what was required - a bit of soldering etc?

Okay I've also found this place in Aus which sells LEDs: http://www.ledshoponline.com/
Can't find a "neo wedge" fitting though :(

Nah no soldering. Just had to get the right LEDs and fit into the original plugs.. Had to rip the old globes out of the housing.. You need to use it..
Ive been saying to myself i got to do cig lighter and ignition LED lights too.. But been saying that one for two years now..:)
One day..:)

Did you have to put an inline resistor in?

I use this guy too..... How good are the T10 parker bulbs.... Bright as all hell!!!
Look damn evil in the parras!!! especially reflecting off the chrome inside the headlight!
Good stuff
PS: the flickering happens to mine too...... I've ordered heaps as all my friends want them... but they don't ebay at all.....
In another ebay shop these parkers sell for 12 pounds sterling!!! Yikes
Steve
the colour change was easy as.. only took me about 30mins..
Blue LED's, resistors in line, drilled small holes on the board, and soldered them in place.. wasn't too hard guys.. just fiddly

I just ordered the new ones that have the high power leds in 4 directions as well as forwards, the ones I have in at the moment that are buggered are the older ones with only one high power led facing forward. still look great though! Did my brothers Falcon interior and instrument cluster a while back too.
I'll put up pics of my interior when my new ones come and I finish the Air con controls, they are the last thing I've been waiting to do.
Seriously love that guy!!!!!!

Yes now that you said that i remmeber i did.. Go no idea wich ones though.. I mounted resistor behind the plug..

Generally speaking about a 500ohm (0.5k) 1/4Watt resistor should fit the bill, but double check the calculations based on your specific LEDs (remember that different LEDs run at different optimum currents and voltages, make sure you know the specs)
Most common resistor would probably be a 470ohm. Not sure why the figure "47" is so common in resistors, never thought about it before...
Once you have the led specs..use the wizard boys and girls...this one generates the circuit if your linking more than one led to the circuit.

Cabin and boot lights are different bulbs, check out that LED dude on eBay, take yours out and measure it first.
My Aircon doesn't in fact have the T4 bulbs I hoped it would, so I'm kinda stuck at the moment. (I do have a 2nd gen though so not sure about yours)
