View Full Version : Put cupholders in central back seat armrest?

Sorry - couldn't remember the real name. I thought if I put console, people would think the bit in the front.

I have 2 kids - 7 and 4. They are forever passing their drinks back and forth to me and my wife because they have no cupholders. Which is a safety hazard. I seriously doubt I'll find a centre back seat armrest with cupholders in it that will fit my Magna - in the same fabric colour. I was thinking; find another beaten up old car that had cupholders in their central armrest, buy it, strip the cupholders out of it, cut the appropriate holes in my one and fit it to my car.

So - what's this thing made on anyway? Is it just a solid foam or something? And, would it be possible to modify it to put 2 cupholders in there???

It would be nice to replace all the seats, but to me it's sheer overkill to do that just to get 2 cupholders.

Viable? Possible?

Regards, Tony

I would just buy new Seats
I have the rear Cupholders out of a TJ I was planning to put in the TR Back seat, only thing is is there is a certain shape in the metal cut out to accommodate them, so you would have to somehow cut all this metal away, hack out the foam underneath, then glue them in hella good.

BJ31OS, you say TH then post a photo from a TL

I'm not sure where they started, but the TJ all have them, and I happen to know a wreckers that has a TJ (or at least did last time I was there a couple of months ago, they have a TH too I'm pretty sure) with a complete interior. I'll check it out for you next time I'm going past there if your interested.

It was the only photo i could find (without going out in the cold and taking a photo) i have seats out of a TH in my TF and they have the cup holders in the rear.

thats not a TL pic.... (or at least not a KL)

TL's have cutouts in the back of the front seats to allow for more rear legroom...

There are seat covers over the pictured seats, probably hiding said cutout.

Furthermore, who cares what third gen it's out of, the only thing we need to know is what third gen had the rear cupholders and how you can get it.

Wreckers, go now.

Thanks guys - so it's a dead TH (safe to say a Solara or Altera rather than Exec) in Melbourne that I'm looking for. Thanks!!

There's seatcovers on though. And wouldn't a pre-TL have the window winder (be it electric or manual) on the door? :)

Back on topic... yup, my TJ has them in the middle. So a TH/TJ/TL would be fine.

If you wanted something cheaper and easier, don't they make cupholders that sit between your window glass and the interior trim?

I can confirm TH+ definately have them, my 2000 TH exec has them, very handy indeed.

From the person who designed the rear armrest cupholders..me :bowrofl:

The frame inside the armrest is different from non-cupholder to cupholder version. This was to increase the distance between the base of the cupholder and the face of the armrest. (You could feel it when you sat in the middle.) Be aware that the brackets, although looking very similar are different. If you use the cup holder armrest with the non cupholder brackets, the armrest will sit tipped back towards the seat, increasing the chance of drinks spilling. You will need the armrest and brackets to make the swap. Thats the only differences in the design, so the armrest with cupholder can be fitted to any model from TE to TL.

The other option for rear cupholders is the NAS centre console lid, which has the cupholders that pop out from the front and rear of the lid. Only problem is finding one.

Its a TL ES I believe. No pre-TL had the cut out for the manual window winders on the doors with power windows. Anyway beside the point really lol

Are they open to the public? And on a Saturday morning? If so, I know where I'm going tomorrow...

Sorry for the thread mine, but was easier than opening another thread and getting burnt for not searching lol

This thread was from a year ago, didnt really answer any questions though.....

Did/has anyone actually manage to get cup holders from a TH+ car and put them into a pre TH car?
Ive got a TF sports, so finding a TH+ with the same trim, would be near impossible to find, so has anyone had the guts to hack away at their centre arm rest and put them in??

Wow, thread from the past. In a word - yes. I now have cupholders in my TF. Pulled the whole flip down bit out of a TH out at the wreckers - think they charged me $25 - and just swapped them over. The fabric is not quite the same shade, but close enough. And, the kids use it all the time...

Don't know about modifying the old central bit though - but it didn't look like it would be an easy or long term job.
