hi

i have a 2.6 tr manual

about 18 months ago i had my timing chain done and my car is rattling again.

I dont drive the car hard at all and it has only been 35,000kms. I had it done at repco joondalup.

so i am not happy and need to do something

any reccomendations for a good mechanic to do the chain properly?

i am on uni holiday i have plenty of time and can access an engine lifter, could i do it myself?

would it be cheaper to buy another engine from the wreckers and pop it in? (my engine has done 250,000)

A chain kit is approx $200 with the two chains, all the guides and tensioners. If you're game and have the mechanical know-how, do it, but buy a gregory's manual as it still helps. If you aren't sure how to do this sort of stuff, send it back to the same mechanic, as he didnt do the work properly or didnt adjust or fit the tensioner correctly, OR did what my mechanic did and just slapped it on any way it could go and have the slack of the chain on the wrong side! If they don't accept...then i guess pay another $700 and get it fixed.

sure its the chain? my TR rattled all the time in the last year i had it but it was the lifters that were screwed. i got some spare ones that you could put in but its not a perminant fix they will probably go again in about 6 months just because of the age of the engine. Fenmac mitsubishi in morley on Rudloc st are great. they looked after my TR the whole time i had it and they look after my TJ now i sent a few other AMC members there all with good feedback so id give them a shot they tend to really know their magnas and give you a straight answer. let me know how it goes man. if worst comes to worst i know where you can get a re con 2.6 and manual gearbox fro real cheap its out of "colas's" TR.

In my experience, lifters make a click/tick noise, whereas the chain makes an almost grinding noise where the chain grinds against the guide.

got a whole 2.6 here if u want it for 200. will just need reconditioning. only done less than 10,000 k's but the weather has gotten 2 it, so just needs a strip and rebuild, wont need any machine work if your after another engine with low k's on it.

Hey mate, if you're interested, I have a BRAND NEW timing kit for Astron with all guides/chains/tensioners for the TR. PM me and we'll work something out.
