Hey,

Just got back in from bedding in a new set of Protex Ultra ceramic pads I picked up from ABS here in Adelaide for $60 for the fronts and i can tell you, they are miles ahead of the standard PBR/Mits pads that were in there!,the Vehicle is a TW VRX and it took me all of 20 mins to do both sides, real easy!,although they had bugger all stopping power at the start (as to be expected!),by the end of some decent stops etc,the pedal come up nice and high and they have more bite and seem to pull up better from from initial application all the way through the pedal travel,so im a happy man,and they will only get better i assume

I only tried them as i have always used Lucas pads in my Camry which are very good, but christ did they dust up,I heard good things about these ceramics being less prone to dust and also squeeling,a pet bloody hate!,so,if you need a pad chage ,i say give them a go

how would you rate them against Bendix Ultimates in braking performace? I have a set of them and they squeel a little and have lots of dust.

I dont know about these but i know those bendix ultimates in my old cars would pull up real nice.... great stopping power, and never had a squealing problem even after a flogging.

I will be in the market for some new pads, the original 1994 pads are nearly due....

So will be interested to hear some comparisons without having to go mega $pads.

Hey fellas,

To be honest,i have never used the ultimates,do the lucas compare to the ultimates?,id say they are on par with the lucas, maybe will fade a littlle earlier, but as a decent standard type pad, they are fine IMO,BTW,this is my first magna, and the brakes are not as good as my camry that i just come out of (DBA slotted and lucas pads) hence why i wanted to upgrade, might do the rears soon, but the new pads have helped a lot in feel and confidence

Steve

errm explain how you bedded in the new pads? By stamping on the pedal over the course of 20mins?

If so,

Ermmm,

20 mins to change both pads knackers, thats what i was saying, but yes, believe it or not you do bed in pads by using the brake pedal!

by slamming the brakes on over a course of 20mins does not bed in brakes properly!

You need to be gentle on them for the first 500km's at least, so that the pad has a good facing against the used disc. You will bugger up both oherwise

I must stutter,

20 mins was taken to FIT both sets of pads to the vehicle, not bed the bloody things in fully, its a process that takes time, hence why i said they will improve over time, but you must get them (both rotor and pad) up to temperture so they get a tranfer coat on them and start to work in harmony,if you dont do this from the get go,you will glaze them and they will never work as intended, for all intesive purposes,i have begun the bedding in process

I have bedded in many sets of pads and spoke to many brake people about the process,And it works for most people, hey,it even recommends it on the paperwork in the pads, but you just dont floor the pedal ,but bring them up to temp then slowly increase the braking force, you do this a number of times in succession, this is called bedding in pads!

The procedure Steevo outlined is correct as it is a bedding in procedure which is done when new pads are installed.

Yes you still need to go easy on the brakes for the next 300ks or so but they'll stop alot better until then compared to if you don't follow the procedure.

Look cybermonkey,no worries,I wasnt being a prick,I just tell it like it is sometimes!

I see bedding in brakes similar to bedding in engines, many, many theories out there, but only a few seem to be the correct way,and i tend to believe the manufacturers, they spend plenty in development, thats for sure,It works for me

i was referring to the correct method of bedding in brakes, as opposed to using a bloody anchor :bowrofl:
