i went for a 20 min drive to my girlfriends last night, down the highway and when i got to the set of lights the car was ideling at 1800 rpm's, it normally runs at 750. i thought the acc may have been sticking so i lifted it up but that didn't do anything.
then when i got to my girlfriends, like another km down the road i turned the car off and motor was still ticking over, then a second or 2 later it almost started up again (lights on dash etc lit up. i waited a min or 2 then started it up again.. same thing happened..
also i was doing a bit of driving around town but it was fine..

P.s earlier that day i was putting a car of carby cleaner through it and i got my brother (who has never driven a car before) to "just rev it a little" so to floored it to RPM and and kept it there for like 4 seconds, i was telling him to get off it but he couldn't hear me... could this have anything to do with it...
thanks all, Paul

was air conditioning on or off

if it is a sticking accelerator cable
dribble oil down inside or get a new cable

if not that
check the vaccume lines and dash pots on the carby for function

then check the butterflys on the carby if they are sticking

I just started getting a slightly similar problem. when I start my car it revs up to abut 2000-2500 then dies back down... and if I leave it in park, it will stall after a few seconds... this only happens occasionally though. some times it runs fine... Dunno if the two problems could be related...

My commodore used to do the exact same thing and the only way i could turn it off was to unplug the main lead that goes from the ignition coil to the distributor. Was a long time ago so i cant remember exactly what was wrong with it.

if it still runs after uplugging the lead, it could be dieseling because of heaps of carbon build up and because of the accelerator is sticking ( the carbon build up is hot enough to ignite and the sticky TB provides the oxygen )

that sounds like the idle control motor on the way out. my 2 cents
