Hi there,

Been looking through the archives and no one has really addressed this question properly. Answers like see a Tranny specialist. If that's what it takes then that's what I'll do.

Well my magnas auto box is giving me grief. Intermitently it slips into neutral, drops back a gear whilst cruising and surges every now and then. Not serious and I can live with it. But given that Magnas have a track record of trasaxel problems, time to check this one out I think. The beasts previous owner replaced the transaxel (with a refurbished one) in 1999. I've had the vehicle for 4 months now.

Soooooo. What I'm wondering is with the above changes is ita absolutely necessary to get my Tranny serviced for $190 (under Used Vehicle mechanical protection plan) or can I do it myself. I can drain the transaxel and replace filters simple enough (except for being scolded by 175 degree axel oil). BUT is it really something that the pros should be looking at ... just in case. I don't want to spend money replacing fluids to discover mechanical fault. But then again I don't particularly want to fork out 200 bucks to find all I needed to do was replace the fluid and filter.

I'd rather spend th emoney on replacing my tape deck with a decent sound system

For Adelaideans out there I get my servicing done by North East Mitsubishi ... they've been looking after my family for several years, not had a problem with the servicing other than price.

Any suggestions before I book my baby in on my rostered day off?

David

i have all the probs you mentioned abt the auto, except the one abt downshifting at cruising speeds. and oh yes, it's intermittent as well. don't bother abt changing your ATF (auto trans fluid) cos i already did and that didn't solve the problem. i guess it's most prob mechanical and magna's are known to have shit gearboxes. mitsu couldn't find fault with it cos the damn thing just didn't want to play up when i wanted it to. so unless you could show the guys at the workshop your problem (and if you do pls let me know what they say) i think it's pointless bringing it to them. just live with it i guess :(

I'll let you know what they say gauss. It's been pissing me off especially the part when you go to accelerate and it conveniently slips to neutral, or sitting at the lights and the beast surges forwards ... heart pounding stuff.
I'll let ya know if they rip me off too ... for $190 they'd better at least change my filter and fluid or I'm gonna cry!
Anyways I hope it'll all be fixed ... I do long distance travel (like 3000km week sometimes) through the regions - out to Ceduna and the like. Last thing I want to have happen is be towed home.

that sounds pretty bad. If its under warranty and wont play up at the dealer, at least if you make them aware that the problem is there now, then get the trans serviced properly- (they can do some adjustments as well as change filter and fluid). the trans place could find the problem and spell it out to the dealer. If you touch the trans yourself instead of having it serviced as schedule, then it blows, they will prolly blame you and wont replace it on warranty.

OK back from the workshop.
Transaxel is running smooth as silk ... and a performance boost (don't know but Yeeeeeehaaaaa anyhow).
Nothing serious at all. They changed the tranny oil and filter, did some fiddling to the computer and all is well. COmforting to know. Only fine filings on the drain bolt ... situation normal.
$160 for the tranny service. When fluids and filter don't cost that much. BUT I didn't get showered in red hot oil.

Glad to hear this worked out, because the tranny is a sometimes frustrating and awkward topic.
