just a bit of experimenting that will be taking place with my Verada..

i mananged to find a set of Pacemakers dirt cheap.. they are damaged a little.. but nothing major.. basically were going to cut the 'bash' collectors (aka press/cone collectors) off, and the 2 lower front pipes (crushed hence the cheapness) tig some new sections on, and repalce the crappy collectors with some nice merge collectors we will make (see link below for explination)

http://www.burnsstainless.com/MergeCollectors/mergecollectors.html

and porting the header plates out a bit as the witness marks left on them indicate the port is indeed a little bigger than the plate itself.. so i will be taking the porting tool to that, hitting a square edge that close to the valve seat is just not good at all..

i wanted to just go right ahead and make a nice tigwelded set of pipes with mergies and everything.. but time is the main constraint.. and yeh they will give a better flow/design over the off the shelf pacies, but it's not a race car.. the pacies will be fine for the vehicle's intended application..

will update with pics along the way

cheers,
mat

i have a question for you

if you are wiling to do all this, and basically replace the whole setup or mod it in some way...why not build your own... how cheap are we talking?

50 bucks might make it viable... time might be the constraint but its going to take time anyways?

true..

well i got a set of pacies for $150.. and one of my best mates is a fabricator with his own workshop.. so were mostly doing it as a bit of in experiment..

i already have a full 2.5" mandril reback system on it, with one of those 2.5" stainless high flow metal 'magic' cat things..

we had a bit of a look this morning a bit closer.. the biggest change we can see would be changing the secondary merge to the system.. still going to port the plates etc..

i have a dyno figure of 158 HP @ the wheels before doing any of this a few weeks ago..

i will be returning to the same dyno after this..

pics will be up after the weekend i swear! :)

Cost nearly $50 just for laser cut flanges. I have made a complete set from scratch for my awd and it's something I don't wish to repeat. Best left to the people with the jig and benders.

all the extractors that my mate designs and makes are all hand fabricated out of mandril bent sections of pipe, all pulse TIG welded, equal length bla bla bla, i don't want to sound like a ********.. it's pretty much his specialty.. just to give you an example of his work.. this is some stuff he has done on a BMW 3.8L storker '320hp' package engine for a company (that after seeing these pipes, and how much better they performed over anything off the shelf, and from the fabricators they had tried) placed an order for 10 sets..

he is not a 'exhaust shop' or anything like that.. the fabrication pretty much speaks for itself..

if i was going all out on the verada i would in a heartbeat get him to whip up some bad boys like that.. along with a full system.. and i could garuntee that they would **** on anything in the aftermarket available..

but hey.. thats just me and my opinion.. you get what you pay for...

but as my vermagna is simply a daily drive car.. i'm not going to go crazy and develop a set of custom tuned length extractors..

i found a set of pacies cheap.. costing next to nix to repair, and do some minor changes that will make them more of a worth while modification..

are they the same plate as these?

I have no doubt that he could make a product that could poop all over any off-the-shelf item.

All the makes I've seen have compromises in pipe diameter, unequal length primaries, poor/tight bend radii, overlapping primary exits in the collector  , short collectors, poor merge angles in the collectors etc, etc, etc. It makes you wonder if they were ever actually 'designed'!!

The only hassle with tig welding is the TIME is takes to get anything done. And the dags it leaves inside the pipe - intruding into the airflow. But, given the number and magnitude of the other serious manufacturing flaws of popular brand's products, several intrusions won't even register - esp on a road car.

I hope your friend makes of go of it and we all look forward to giving his workmanship and effort the thumbs-up it should rightly deserve!

i havne never seen tig penetrate and leave dags on the inside, Mig on the other hand........ well.. lets not get started.. haha..

yeh this little Merge section should make a nice difference, but i tell you what.. if she doesn't reduce the amount of fuel she slurps up i will be getting rid of it in favour of somthing like a Mazda 6, or accord Euro.. (new O2 sensor, and stock air box going back on OR nice CAI for the pod filter)
