What are the chances of this wheel to fit on a TJ? Too wide and it will rub?
Size:17"x9"

i thought 3rd gens could take 8 inches in the front and 8.5 inches in the rear any bigger and they rub

I am liking it and I want to make sure before getting it. My current wheels are 20x8 both front and rear and still have a bit space. Do you think widening my front guards and rear will do the job? Widening could led me to another project :)

i think it would be more of a problem of the tyre hitting the suspenion strut.

Doubt they will fit at all.
When you increase the width while keeping the same offset, the increase in width is shared evenly on both sides, ie, an increase of 2inches while keeping stock offset means rim will be 1inch closer to the strut, and stick out 1 inch towards the guards.
Im pretty sure they will rub the strut.

Excuse my ignorance - so say you wanted to put on a 9 inch wheel, and the standard width was 7 inches with an offset of 40 and you were worried that it would rub on the inside (suspension strut), could you safely get a wheel with a different offset so that more of the extra width is towards the "otside" (towards the guard). If so, would the new offset for this type of wheel be greater or less than 40?

Less.
But then, if it is a front wheel drive you are not allowed to change the track.
